In the past year or so, stores have started doing Buy 1 Get 1 40% sales. It used to be Buy 1 get 1 50% off. Easy math to figure out the savings. 40% still not hard but not as easy. But the question is, why did stores start using 40% instead of 50%. Some advantage I'm not seeing other then they are not discounting an additional 10%?
People will still buy the item because its on sale, and the store gets more money than if it were 50% off.
It's just so they get to advertise a sale with it barely even being a sale at all. TRU is most famous for that, because they've perfected making sale where you're still buying things at full retail price.
It only works as a sale if TRU are less than a set amount more expensive compared to what someone else is selling the item for before the sale. I.e. Example price 12.99 x 2 = 26.98 pre-sale TRU price 14.99 x 2 = 29.98 (4.00 more) post sale 14.99 +8.99 = 23.98 (you save 3.00 over normal retail in another store selling at retail) If the item had already been reduced and stayed that way and then was on an offer too then obviously such a sale is good. In general and from a UK perspective I find TRU sales only worth while if I buy enough to qualify for free shipping and only on items that I'd otherwise have to import from America or China. They don't even let you use most vouchers on top of most offers - which is mean as voucher stacking is almost encouraged in American TRU. Besides TRU the way they keep monopolising the toylines from popular Genre Movies isn't exactly putting them in my good books the last couple of years - as they never actually get a whole line in and never get the later waves - if the product was more broadly available (like say Beast Hunters was) then the amount of stuff that goes missing is much much less.
i'm so tired to tru's bogo50 or 40 'deals', it brought the price down to what everyone else is selling, but then you have to find two figs you actually want in the sea of bumblebutts.
