Didn't realize how much of a difference there was between the Takara and Hasbro versions of this figure - the plastic on the Hasbro one looks "cheap". It is because the Takara one is painted?

I believe he is showing the most recent Habsro reissue on the right, not the original (confirmed after noticing the box in the background). After it came out, a lot of posters here indicated that it had 'sketchy' plastic, for lack of a better description. There are reports that the 'wings' in bot mode are far from opaque, lending some to believe it was thinner, or at least, of different composition form the original Hasbro and Takara releases. It has also been mentioned that it is much more 'swirly,' not to mention the greenish tint of the chest window. Since I already had the Takara reissue version (that came our after the comic version), I decided to skip the Hasbro reissue.

I’m not sure about screw sizes. I don’t have anything to measure them with at the moment. You’re talking about the screw that’s inside the black ball right?

The TT Grimlock isn’t painted, just has a higher quality of plastic. Overall, the materials for TT are a lot better than Hasbro.

That’s the 2nd release Hasbro Grimlock and 1st release TT Grimlock. The plastic on the Hasbro one is a tad bit cheaper in feel and look. The teeth and claws are rounded instead of sharp because of US toy laws and the clear plastic has a slight tint of green to it. The Hasbro release isn’t bad, come with a crown at least, but I’d go TT any day of the week. I just picked him up because he was cheap. I think $99 or somewhere close to that. The body and waist breakdown pictures are of Hasbro Grimlock.

Edit: Nevermind Sinestro, you're right. I forgot about the clear plastic shell release. I update my response to reflect that.

Yes, it’s the screw that keeps the shoulder from popping off of the die cast piece. No big deal if you don’t know the size. FT Grinder is my current bot-mode Grimmy, and MP-8 is in dino mode with Ultra Magnus and MP-9 Rodimus on my movie shelf.

If I ever run across the size of it, I'll let you know.

@Agent 539 do my eyes deceive me or are the MP10 arm triangles molded out of translucent yellow plastic? If so, are they the same color as the yellow pieces on the waist plate? Wondering how different they look with red plastic behind them

Sadly, they are just painted over the red. I just checked because I wasn’t sure, but it’s just paint over red plastic.

Edit: That was for MP-01. For MP-10, it is translucent plastic painted yellow. The arm piece is clear with a coat of yellow paint. The waist pieces are yellow translucent pieces. Seems like there’s a bit or grey paint on the backside of the piece that shows yellow. The rest is clear plastic.

So for MP-10, are the yellow forearm triangles molded out of translucent yellow plastic or just clear plastic?

The legs and knee system took some time to put back together. The spring didn't make it easy.

I'm currently on vacation, with Prime back home, but don't the human figures have 3 magnets each? (two in the feet, one in the back?)

Also: you sir, are awesome. I would not have had the courage to take him apart.

When I was testing the back pin, I thought it was a magnet as well but it's a rivet. The bodies of Spike and Sparkplug at two pieces riveted together where as Carly is one molded piece because her upper body is smaller.

Thanks @Agent 539 for taking the initiative and time to do these detailed breakdowns. I love seeing those disassembled pictures! So many tiny bits and pieces go into making these crazy toys. Optimus Prime's left knee on my copy has gone bunk and I'm going to attempt @BrutiKing's fix-it tutorial tomorrow. I'm awaiting a set of those "Moody Tools - JIS Type S Driver Set" screwdrivers you recommended. :)  They should be delivered tomorrow on my day off. As weird as it is, I'm kinda looking forward to the fix! As there isn't any permanent damage, I"m viewing it as just another way of playing with this toy.

Sounds like you have your day off spoken for. The easiest way I’ve found for re-assembling the knee is to start on the outer side first. The spring is a tad bit too powerful for the knee joint so be careful of that. I’ll run through @BrutiKing ’s fix when I get some free time so because it’s a valuable tutorial. Good luck!
