Trying to find something to read. I want something goofy and simple, not philosophical and profound like the newer series!

Sounds like you want the Dreamwave comics.

The Ghostbusters/Transformers crossover is probably the closest I've ever felt to a comic capturing the tone of the original G1 toon. Or maybe it was just their version of Optimus.

More Than Meets the Eye/Lost Light wasn't afraid of being silly.

Mars Attacks The Transformers doesn't really have the full G1 vibe but it's goofy and has some great art

Uh... Maybe the Marvel G1 series? But it went for a pretty different tone even from the start.

Oh yeah, this was a ton of fun. A lot of the crossover serieses have had that vibe.

I'd say go with Dreamwave, but skip "Prime Directive" and go straight to "War and Peace". "Prime Directive" had its moments, but it was mostly terrible. As for "War and Peace" it isn't as goofy as the cartoon, as there are some deep things going on, but as far as characterization it is without a doubt the closes thing to the original cartoon that you can get. Even the original Marvel comic felt nothing like the original cartoon, and it ran concurrently with the cartoon.

What also should be included is what was to become Dreamwave G1 volume 3. Which was the G1 ongoing series.

Outside of the already mentioned DW series, also IDW's All Hail Megatron.

Although it officially is the second stage in the IDW universe series, following the -ation series, it only connects loosely to those. It reads very much as a a mulitparter from the G1 cartoon series, albeit a bit more brutal with showing the casualties where those were only implied in the cartoon.
