My neighbor hit , scratched the from passenger side wheel of my suv. The impact was hard enough that it turned my wheels the other way. I caught it on my security camera and he knows I have a camera. It's has been more than 24 hrs and he has not said anything or done anything about the incident. He saw me today and waved at me but went inside his house. I want the rims replaced (Bec I keep mine in show condition) and make sure rhere is not alignment , suspension issues.. we casually talk but not good friends . would you do?
Yeah. Call the police. They should be able to get his insurance information so you can either file a claim against his insurance company, or you file a claim with your insurance company and then they subrogate against his company (meaning they get the money back from them). Now if he doesn't have insurance, then he's gonna get a ticket and probably whatever else the state DMV might punish him for. Leaving a note will do little too nothing because he can say he never got it. Taking to him? Well...if you feel you can. But from working in the insurance industry, I'd tell you to call the cops and follow what I said above. It will ensure you get your rim replaced/fixed.
I would confront him first and tell him that you have video evidence that he is at fault for damages to your vehicle and that demand that he takes responsibility for repairs. If he denies it or gives you any trouble then file a report for local authorities. Also you should inform your insurance company right away.
It's technically a hit and run. Report it to the police as soon as possible to get the process started. He may be mad you didn't go to him to settle up, but without the report the insurance may not do anything and you will be liable for the deductible.
If you are generally on friendly terms with him, I'd speak with him directly. Avoid being confrontational if you can help it. Let him know that you expect it to be fixed (either through insurance or through a "gentlemen's agreement", if that is possible), and let him know that you saw it on your security camera. If he blows you off, then call the police. Don't let it fester. And make sure you have a backup copy of the security camera footage.
I'd tell him straight up, "Hey man, my security camera captured this..." and show him the footage on my smartphone. Then say, "How do you want to handle this?" If he refuses to take responsibility, then go to the police. Honestly, I think you waited too long as it is. It should have been handled as soon as you found out. Good luck!
i have it saved and backed up on youtube.. i know it shoud have been handled as soon as i found out but i tried to give him a chance to man up being that we thought we were cool neighbors. but seems like we aint that cool after all. some people will try to get out of that responsibility whenever they can..
I would call the police on him. Dont want to talk to me and get things fixed? Well, maybe I dont want it either.
^I was thinking that... But I'm guessing your neighbor doesn't have insurance, financial issues, or he might have a substance abuse problem (I know I know don't assume, but shit) so that's why he's being a dick, or he's just a dick. Either ways, I'd call the cops and file a report immediately. It protects you first and foremost. You can drop the charges if can work things out with the neighbor? Good luck.
I think there's a misconception of what the police can and cannot do in this scenario. You can call the police to file the report, but I do not believe they have the ability to force the neighbor to pay for anything. The purpose of the police report is to have documentation to back up the video recording. Most insurance contracts require you to report the damage of the vehicle whether or not you decide to file a claim to get your car fixed. Your insurance is what will get you your car fixed. Calling the police to file the report can also help you discover whether or not the other person actually has insurance. Because if they do, you will have two options (usually): 1. File a claim with your insurance. You may have to pay the deductible (or they can waive it depending on how they handle it), but you'll get your car fixed. They will then subrogate (go after his insurance) to get the money back. And then you'll also get your deductible back (if you paid it). 2. You can then file a claim against his insurance. @gjcv1408 I would suggest you call the police, and your insurance company to get things started as soon as possible. Keep the video recording so you can show the officers when they get to your house. It would probably be in your best interest NOT to confront your neighbor because that might not end so well.
Didn't vote, but I would do as many others have suggested and report it to the police. Also contact our insurance to see what options you have. Also, once the police report is filed, I would talk to the neighbor as well. Do it as politely as possible, but do mention that you have a video recording of what happened. Again, mention it in a polite manner, without being confrontational. Something along the lines of "...Recently, it has come to my attention you accidentally hit my SUV. My cameras recorded the whole thing. So, if you were not aware of doing so, it is okay, but I want you to know that it bothers me you did not tell me about this. Can we talk over how to proceed with this?" You do not have to use those exact words, but it is a start. But how you proceed with this issue is your choice, Just some helpful advice is all.
