The ones in scale are MP10, the seekers, soundwave, quakewave and the lambos. MP1 and MP5 do not scale at all and it's debateable whether rodimus and grimlock fit in the new scale (I use them but some do not- hot rod too big and grimlock too small).

the ones i use, mp 1 and 5 stay away from my mp displays now, too big and clunky to be considered mps imo

    MP08/hasbro grimlock
MP09 rodimus, hasbro's cheap plastic and lack of a trailer don't cut it
MP10 prime, more paint, less g2 colours
    MP11 starscream
    MP12 sideswipe
MP13 soundwave, cartoon accuracy wins for me here
    MP13B soundblaster and ratbat
    MP14 red alert
    MP15 tapes
MP16 tapes no fin snapping on buzzsaw helps my decision on these
    MP17 prowl
hasbro thundercracker gets a pass from being the new mold and not being available from takara yet.
have MP06 in the display in jet mode until something better comes along

if you're going for fringe or sir not appearing in this films, then sunstorm, tigertrack, g2 swipe, acidstorm, nemesis all can be added

    A definitive MP Collection?

    That's simply MP01 -> MP<Insert current number here>, with all variants.

I have MP 1, 3 (Walmart Skywarp), 5 and 12, with 13, 15 17 and 19 on it's way. But I gotta admit that 1 and 5 doesn't fit MP anymore. They're more like SOC and will probably be displayed separately.

    The absolute must-haves are:

    MP08- Grimlock
    MP09- Rodimus Prime
    MP10- Optimus Prime
    MP11- Starscream
    MP12- Sideswipe
    MP13- Soundwave
    MP13B- Soundblaster
    MP14- Red Alert
    MP15- Rumble/Ravage
    MP16- Frenzy/Buzzsaw
    MP17- Prowl
    MP18- Bluestreak
    MP19- Smokescreen

Also MP20 and 21 (Wheeljack and Bumblebee) if they're real. Takara versions are preferred in all but MP10, but if moneys an issue, go Hasbro for some.

I also have Hasbro Thundercracker and Skywarp, MP03G- Ghost Starscream and MP04- Optimus Prime and MP05-Megatron, but I wouldn't say they're needed for a definitive list. (although Skywarp and Thundercracker are the best versions right now). MP11S- Sunstorm is also pretty damn great.

For me, the definitive MP collection is all post MP-09 Takara releases that featured prominently in the G1 cartoon. So I would not include guys like Sunstorm (background seeker) or G2 Sideswipe. Though I own the former, and have pre-ordered the latter, that's just a manifestation of my impatience for new MP figures.

Of the current & announced 'coming soon' releases, it's easy...

    MP-08 Grimlock
    MP-10 Optimus Prime
    MP-11 Starscream
Hasbro MP Thundercracker (until/unless Takara does their own proper one without shite decals)
    MP-12 Sideswipe
    MP-13 Soundwave & Laserbeak
    MP-14 Red Alert
    MP-15 Rumble & Ravage
    MP-16 Frenzy & Buzzsaw
    MP-17 Prowl
    MP-18 Bluestreak
    MP-19 Smokescreen
    MP-20 Wheeljack
    MP-21 Bumblebee

Whatever ones I can afford that are in scale with each other. Right now my collection consists of:
    MP-10 Optimus Prime (TRU)
    Grimlock (TRU)
    Rodimus (TRU)
    Starscream (Walmart)
    Skywarp (Walmart)
    Thundercracker (TRU)
    Red Alert (Takara)
    MP-10B (Takara)
    Acid Storm (TRU)

MP-01 and MP-05 are used as stand alone displays for me. I have a feeling now that MP-10 has been created, all future MPs will be this scale.

Everything MP-10 and beyond as far as I'm concerned... don't feel like anything before that fits in.

That's why I finally broke down and bought Acid Storm. He makes a great filler/hold over figure and then eventually he grew on me.

I would agree. I suppose you could also add any 3rd party figures that fit into the MP format.

For me, not being a completionist, I'm gonna pick the characters that I have an affinity for. Bumblebee is my absolute favourite, and him being announced is what brought me back into the MP line after MP-01.

My ultimate line-up will probably consist of

MP-10 Prime (still have my G1 toy, and although MP-01 is great, since he's not to scale I'll just pose him separately)
    MP-21 Bumblebee
MP-18 Bluestreak (I always liked that moment in the first episode when he follows Ironhide after the latter goes chasing the Decepticons)
MP-?? Ironhide (For the same reasons)

I still might get Sideswipe, and then any others who speak to me when they come out. I'd love a Silverbolt MP.

As far as decepticons go I'd like to get the future release of Megatron. I'd get Soundwave too if he wasn't so expensive (although maybe I don't need his cassettes). Motormaster would be great. If MP-11 ever gets rereleased at a good time I'd get that.

Anyway, this is all because I don't have the money or space to collect them all! Otherwise I'd definitely get everything from MP-10 onwards, with Grimlock thrown in for good measure

"Definitive" is going to vary from one person to the next. For me and maybe me only, I would have to include PP-03 Attack, Jet, and Elegy, as well as FT03 Quakewave. People can debate the name on the box all they want, but from what I see looking at the shelf, my collection would be incomplete if they were to go missing.

Agreed. Masterpiece is just like any other line. It's one thing to pick and choose for a collection display, but quite another to make a claim of having a "definitive" collection. Like it or not, completionism is what constitutes for completing a collection. Toy collections are dictated by what a company includes as their product line.

As said, whether or not one chooses to follow that precident set forth is the freedom of the particular collector. An individual can create a collection as one sees fit. You wanna start with MP-10? Awesome, and go for it. You only want Soundwave and his minions? Cool. However, when a word like "definitive" is used, then one has to back up and consider who is doing the defining. At the end of the day, that's the toy company, as it's their product.

Also, whether one thinks MP-1/4 is < or > MP-10 is irrerevant: MP-1/4 is a Masterpiece simply because it is. The same goes for MP-5. The only two that are even remotely debatable are the movie Bumblebee and Starscream simply because they weren't designed as "Masterpiece"; though they were packaged as such so by default they are as well.
