Well, there's the core group of Frenzy, Rumble, Ravage, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw and Ratbat.
But there have been and will be other cassettes in the world-building. I also think there are other cassette-lords like Soundwave and Blaster - we just haven't met them yet (Soundblaster, perhaps, depending on the continuity). It seems weird that those two would be the last of their kind.
Make them a Mini-Con subgroup (I just want to bring Mini-Con back as the umbrella term for all the small guys. Micromasters, Headmasters, Targetmasters, Mini Cassettes, etc) that was specifically reformatted to be Soundwave's minions. Soundwave only had Laserbeak at first, but as time has gone on, his ranks have grown considerably as he ascended the Decepticon chain of command to become the arguable 2nd in command on the Decepticons on Earth.
Laserbeak: A mechanimal who decided to follow Soundwave in his primary programming days. Far more intelligent than your standard cyber-condor, Laserbeak gives even the most elite humanoid spies among the Decepticons a run for their money thanks to his unassuming bestial form. In the event of Soundwave's destruction or loss of ability to call upon his Cassettes, Laserbeak is reformatted to have a humanoid robot mode and a cyber-condor alternate mode.
Buzzsaw: Laserbeak's yellow counterpart, he has in instinct and killing potential what Laserbeak has in intelligence. Likes to pick up Mini-bots in his claws and drop them miles above the ground. Granted a yellow version of Laserbeak's humanoid form in the event of Soundwave's loss of ability to call upon his cassettes.
Ratbat: The first of Soundwave's cassette companions that are a proper Transformer. Basically his IDW portrayal, a treacherous senator who sold out his compatriots to the Decepticons during their uprising, and was subsequently rebuilt into his well-known bat form. Specializes in night reconnaissance. He is rebuilt in his Senator form in the event of Soundwave losing the ability to call upon his cassettes.
Frenzy, Rumble, and Enemy: A trio of humanoid Mini-Cons who were swayed to the Decepticon cause, and chose to follow Soundwave. Rumble is purple/blue, Frenzy is red/black, Enemy is red/white. Rumble specializes in the creation of small earthquakes, Frenzy and Enemy are front-line fighters. In the event of Soundwave losing the ability to call upon his cassettes, they retain their humanoid robot forms, but gain the ability to transform into tanks (2010 Frenzy/Rumble, anyone?).
Ravage: One of the first Decepticons to join up with the cause, he became a very well-known figure to the early Autobots and was deemed one of the highest priority targets. As a result, he was willingly reformatted into his panther robotic form to serve as one of Soundwave's minions to "hide out". Specializes in ground reconnaissance. Unlike Ratbat, he always takes a new humanoid form resembling his BW forms in the event of Soundwave losing the ability to call upon his cassettes. The panther motif kinda stuck with him.
Squawktalk and Beastbox: Former DJs for a radio station blaring Decepticon propaganda in the early days of the way, these two were reformatted into their bestial forms to work with Soundwave. When combined to form Squawkbox, he is essentially the translator for those Mini-Cassettes or Mini-Cons who are incapable of speech or too dumb to form a full, coherent sentence. Officially designated as Communications Specialists, but they also dabble in interrogation, although more often than not, this just results in Beastbox painting the room pink with his prisoner.
Overkill, Slugfest, Dile, and Saur: A failed attempt by the Decepticons to create their own version of the Autobot's Dinobots, they were reformatted into smaller forms to serve Soundwave. While Slugfest, Dile, and Saur are dumb enough to just accept this, Overkill chafes at this subservience, and disobeys Soundwave's orders whenever possible (he WAS modeled after Grimlock, after all). Slugfest specializes in frontline combat, as would Overkill if he ever listened to a word Soundwave says. Dile and Saur can combine to form Legout, who serves as one of the Decepticon's gunners. In the event of Soundwave becoming unable to call upon his cassettes, these Mini-Dinobots are reformatted into forms resembling their former counterparts. Overkill gets a Grimlock-esque robot mode, Slugfest resembles Snarl, Saur resembles Sludge, and Dile resembles a much larger Slash. Dile and Saur do lose the ability to combine into Legout in this event, however.
Laserbeak, Ravage, and Buzzsaw were victims of discrimination due to their beast bodies. They were befriended by Soundwave since he was one of the few who treated them with kindness. Upon joining the Decepticons, they became the first of Soundwave’s cassettes. Laserbeak is the intelligent spy. Ravage is the saboteur loyal to the Decepticon cause. Buzzsaw is the sadistic assassin.
Rumble and Frenzy were vicious street thugs before joining the Decepticons and becoming Soundwave’s cassettes. Rumble is blue and uses piledrivers that causes earthquakes. Frenzy is red and uses sonic frequencies to disrupt foes.
Ratbat was a corrupt senator who profited off the civil unrest on pre-war Cybertron. However once the war kicked off, he was badly damaged and was forcibly rebuilt into his bat body to serve as one of Soundwave’s cassettes.
I feel like Buzzsaw (and maybe Rumble/Frezy the blue one and Ratbat) could easily get the job done
I'm happy with the Masterpiece cassettes apart from Ravage who needs jaw articulation.
Though I love Earthrise Soundwave, I do wish his chest cavity fit G1 and MP cassettes.
No casseticons. Soundwave shouldn't be a cassette player anymore and without that, them transforming into rectangles or cylinders feels very forced.
Don't get me wrong, the characters still exist they just have real alt modes.
The prime ones fit that description well
So no fun gimmick, then? Because Soundwave spitting out tiny robots from his chest is like the appeal of the character. I don't care if they're just blocks of technology or folded up guys. I liked Cybertron's hexagonal cylinders because it wasn't just Lasberbeak but his weapons as well, I also liked things like the autoscout in G1.
I'd do away with the gimmick entirely and give everyone separate altmodes, Soundwave included.
I'd love to make soundwave a record prayer and all of the cassettes records if I were in control of a show
Not cassettes. Rather: motorcycles, drones, jet skis, etc. (small vehicles hauled by Soundwave, who transforms into a large military communications transporter van).
I have a strong distaste for mass-shifting handheld immobile alt modes. I don’t blame Rumble for behaving like a punk— his alt mode is bloody useless.
Every time Soundwave gets a redesign, it sucks. Animated? Pathetic. DOTM? Bad. Prime? Awful. Just keep Soundwave as a cassette player and justify it by making him overly-nostalgic for the 1980s.
That would give him a personality beyond being Megatron's maid and we can't have that.
They should turn into Cybertronian hard drives, except for maybe ravage who could turn into a Jaguar car like in Alternators
When i mean cassetticons, i mean the characters. not them being cassettes.
Alright, more specific:
Laserbeak is actually the name for a flock of drones that combine into my Soundwave's body (he's a living computer virus)
Ravage is Soundwave's partner and the only one besides the Flock to actually ally with him. Transforms from robot jaguar to a Jaguar car.
Rumble and Frenzy are those two guys sort of like Crumplezone and Frenzy. Soundwave blackmails /threatens them to do his thug work. Rumble turns into a big truck or hummer, Frenzy is his gaudy supercharger.
Ratbat is neutral and created his own Marauders guild, he's basically Soundblaster from the Netflix series. Transforms into an experimental aerial refueling drone.
Buzzsaw transforms from a more conventional robot mode to a helicopter. Read his original bio and think of him using the helicopter blades as his buzzsaw to chop up corpses into what he considers works of art.
And those are the ones I've thought of.
In my own personal head canon....The cassettes are all blank, Soundwave, Blaster etc. store the character personalities and sparks inside them until they bring up a cassette and record the partner onto the body (which helps with the Rumble / Frenzy argument....hey, sometimes Soundwave throws out a blue cassette body for Rumble and other times it happens to be red.)
Separate names with a comma.
