I was digging through my pile of DVDs yesterday and I found the first one I ever bought. Do you remember what your first DVD was? I'll never forget making that transition from VHS to DVD, because it was so huge.
Tim Burton's Batman (Had to ask my dad for this one). I remember that even though we had a DVD player, I still spent a good two years watching VHS tapes.
City of Lost Children back in 1998. Still have it. What's more interesting is that I can't remember my first DVD player. Unfortunately the players have a far shorter life-span than the disks.
I'm on the 4th or 5th one, each of them a different brand (although I can't remember what brand my first one was). My Toshiba lasted the longest. The $30 shitbox I bought from Target had the shortest life at about 4 months. :/
Gladiator. Got it as a present to go with the new dvd player. I'm honestly not sure I've ever watched it since the first time.
Friday lmao! bought my DVD player from Circuit city (98-99) then bought this movie from tower records..
When my family first bought a dvd player, it came with The Matrix. My first dvd was a gift: The Usual Suspects (my favorite movie at the time. *sigh* these days I realize how flawed a movie it is). First dvd I bought was probably The Fifth Element.
Damn. I got 5 years out of an early Samsung model and another 5 from an off-brand German player. Admittedly the second one made creaking noises for the last year I had it, but I was hanging out for BD players to drop and I coulden't find a decent short term replacement. Even decent manufacturers were dropping stuff like optical output and DTS on most models to drive prices down once the proles caught onto the format.
Bought Fight Club 2-disc and The Matrix with gift cards from Xmas 2000 a few weeks before I actually got the DVD player. Technically, the player was a Christmas gift, too, but my dad took me out to buy it in January to take advantage of price drops and so I could be picky about the features. Got a JVC that still works like a charm.
