OK Classics started with all the new molds, and was later filled in with a couple repaints like the Cybertron Legends and Energon Devastator. Also if you wanna count Botcon 2007 Springer Wierdwolf and Huffer which are all Cybertron repaints. Now the upcoming Universe line aside from the sweet new molds coming our way we have seen Blaster and Heavy Load which are indeed repaints (which i am sure arent gonna be the only ones). should these repaints be considered Classics or shuffled over to the previous TF Universe line.
Personally, I'm going to concider them "Classics", as they make nice additons to the others, imo. In the end it's up to personal opinion. The legends figures, while they won't be displayed with the other Classics when I get them, I also concider them "Classics", but I'll be putting them in the "Others" section. Similar question was brought up with the first classics about the Minicons and Legends figures. Some counted them as Classics, some didn't (I personally do count them, but don't actually have any).
dont some people consider TRU Soundwave as a Classics too? what about the Chevy Aveo Universe figure where the hell does he fit in
Pepsi Prime, Masterpiece Prime, and MP Starscream were all in Classics packaging but didnt mention the line anywhere. Soundwave on the other hand, actually featured co-sells with the other Classics figures, but at the same time the box was designed to fit in with the re-issues, making him sort of a grey area. As Raven said, a lot of the Classics line depends on what you want to collect, cos it isnt really an officially organized line, like say, Cybertron. I personally dont put G1 figures with modern ones, other people might not care. As for Swerve, his instructions feature the Universe 1 logo. So just say he's part of that line for your sanity's sake.
I think the repaints should be considered Universe repaints - reused molds with G1 (or otherwise) names based on colorschemes. Universe Ramjet, for example, does NOT strike me as a G1 Ramjet, just a G1 inspired recolor. A recreation of a character in a different universe. Just as Cybertron Soundwave is not G1 Soundwave, Universe Blaster is not G1 Blaster, just inspired by, or based on, if you prefer, G1 Blaster.
I'm only counting the new molds as Classics, not the reused molds from other toy lines. But then again, I'm pretty picky about which Classics I pick up. The only ones I have from the Classics 1.0 (or wanted, for that matter) are the three wide-release seekers and Mirage. Out of the new line, I'm definitely picking up Prowl. The rest I'm not sure about yet.
There's a bit of a difference in the scenarios, though. The characters you named are not supposed to be their G1 selves. They were made in their respective continuities, not in a G1-offshoot, and they feature notably different personalities and powers than their G1 counterparts. Now if you said "I dont use Classics Devastator as his G1 self," that would be more like Blaster. Blaster on the other hand, being in a line of G1-reborn characters, with the words "classic series" on his box, may very well be intended to be G1 Blaster, from a canon standpoint. You dont have to use him in that capacity of course, and it remains to be seen what his tech spec will say or how he'll be used in the club comics, as those 2 things will dictate if he really is G1 Blaster. But from the evidence we have now, it's entirely possible that Hasbro intends him to be G1. So for those of us who like to sort our collection by canon, he would be in Classics, until we're told otherwise.
From a line standpoint, they're Classics. The Botcon 2007 lithograph is the best way to figure out who are all Classics. (It had to be approved by Hasbro, after all). Here's a quick little checklist.. 2006 Voyagers Optimus Prime Megatron Jetfire 2006 Deluxes Starscream Astrotrain Bumblebee Rodimus 2006 Mini-Cons Demolition Team Dinobots Night Rescue Team 2006 Legends Fireflight Perceptor Leo Prime Trypticon 2006 Store Exclusives TRU Soundwave, Laserbeak, and Ravage 2006 Other Masterpiece Optimus Prime Optimus vs. Megatron two pack 2007 Deluxes Grimlock Ramjet Mirage Cliffjumper 2007 Mini-Cons Dirt Digger Team Predator Attack Team Clear Skies Team 2007 Legends Bumblebee Jetfire Menasor Whirl 2007 Store Exclusives Wal-Mart Devastator Target Ultra Magnus vs. Skywarp 2007 Botcon Exclusives Thundercracker Thrust Dirge Dreadwind Bugbite Springer Huffer Weirdwolf Invisible Mirage 2008 Ultras Powerglide Onslaught 2008 Voyagers Blaster Heavy Load 2008 Deluxes Prowl Tankor Sunstreaker Galvatron 2008 Legends Starscream Red Alert Onslaught 2008 Club Exclusives Nightbeat Oh, and since he's in the comic, and on the poster, I have Action Master Snarl on my Classics Shelf with Tyrranitar. It's possible that the Club Seacons will be considered Classics too, but we don't know for sure yet. Chris
Same here. I have Cybertron Soundwave and wasn't as impressed with him as I had hoped. I also don't feel it looks enough like blaster.
If you want to go that route, I think you can also include the Club Exclusives, Skfall, Landquake, and Breakaway. They do appear alongside the Classics in the club comic, even though it is canonically acknowledged that they dimension-hopped from the AEC universe. And maybe even Alpha Trion, since they meet in the most recent issue. I find discussions like these simultaneously fun and frustrating. I can completely sympathize with the anal need to group things by line or by universe, but trying to rope all the different TF lines/universes/aesthetics together into a cohesive whole is like herding cats. Inconsistent, illogical, self-contradictory cats. Ultimately I've just started following the highly subjective "looks good together" display philosophy. I group figures that look, to me, like they belong together.
I'm only considering the new molds Classics. I put the "Classics" Minicons and Legends with my Cybertron collection, and if I get any of the repaints down the line (that aren't repaints of the new updated G1 molds) I'll put them with the line the molds originated in.
I simply lump anyone that originates from the post-Marvel G1 of the Club comics to be Classics. Soundwave would be the only potential exception since the figure could act as BOTH a G1 reissue and a stand-in for "Classics" Soundwave who has no figural representation otherwise. Ultimately, I'm not all that fussed about whether or not Hasbro or the Club decide which figures are actually Classics, because I don't have to buy them all just because of that one fact! Personally, since the Club has integrated Mini-Cons into this universe, the only figures I personally feel can and should be left out without issue would be the Legends figures. They're all repaints of Cybertron molds, and many represent characters that simply don't exist anywhere in the universe yet or contradict existing and known Classics characters - like Bumblebee, Jetfire, or the upcoming Onslaught.
Skyfall and co. aren't part of Classics. They're from the AEC universe. Snarl is actually part of the Classics Universe. In any case, I have him on my Classics shelf... Anyone can do whatever they want, of course. Chris
I'll get Heavy Load purely because I don't have the original version of the toy, but I couldn't care less about Blaster; I think it looks absolutely awful. As for the topic: I'm only counting original moulds as actual Classics; any other I'll count as Universe.
