Through the history of the G1 toyline/animation (a bit less so the comics which didn't seem to feature the sub teams as much individually beyond their introductions), most teams had a clearly defined rival.
I was thinking about the Monsterbots this AM and wondering who their opposing team was (i don't recall their really being one)

Which got me thinking about what teams lacked that clearly defined rival:
Some examples: Dinobots: first the Contructicons, then the Predacons, Sparkabots -vs- Firecons, Bot -vs- Con Head and Targetmasters, etc. Mini bots -vs- Cassetticons (later -vs- Autobot Tapes)

ones that popped into my head as not really having opposing teams:
    Horrorcons
    Seacons
    Monsterbots

any others ya'll can think of?

    Monster Pretenders

Throttlebots are sorta opposed by Duocons, at least in my head, likewise Jumpstarters vs. Battlechargers.

Who are the Dinobots' rivals?: Constructicons?(rivaled by Omega Supreme?), Predacons(rivaled by Sky Lynx?), Insecticons? Deluxe Insecticons?

huh, i always thought of the Dinobots -vs- the Constructicons in 85, then kind of more the Predacons in 86. Sky Lynx being more of a one-off i didn't really factor into the equation. But you are right about Omega Supreme also being a rival to Devastator.

and yeah, not sure who i'd consider the opposite number of the Insecticons. Maybe the 85 minibots? the 84 minibots -vs- the Cassettes and the 85s -vs- the Insecticons. (that's inferral by me, nothing really defined as such.)

I always thought of the monsterbots, and even computron as being the opposite of the terrorcons. the seacons have no opposite. neither do the insecticons. also I don't think the autobot rail-bots (train-bots) had an opposite either..

Seacons/Piranacon's opposite is Powermaster Optimus Prime . Monsterbots and Horrorcons are opposites.

In the 1988 G1 toy catalog, there's mostly direct mirror groups in 'Bots and 'Cons (each has Triggerbots/cons, large and small headmasters, six-changers, etc.). Then, if you look at what's left, the Monsterbots would go against the Horrorcons, and Piranacon against Powermaster Optimus Prime (see also the Japanese cartoon continuity).

1988 is kinda weird. Yes, the Seacons would be PM Prime's rival. But then he had a second rival as God Ginrai (when combined with God Bomber) in Japan with Overlord. It's really a shame those figures didn't see an American release. Kids would've gone ga-ga over Overlord. I know I did after I learned about him 7 years later.

Monstructor...everyone is his rival when it takes all six of you to stand as tall as a standard Pretender shell. He's like the Transformers version of Muppet Man.

Deluxe Autobots Roadbuster and Whirl don't seem to have a rival equivalent. At least, to my knowledge.

Natural answer seems to be the Deluxe Insecticons. Fellow non-Takara toys. And they're deluxe.

i guess in the finale they laid down arms and became neutrals/autobot allies but kakuryu (the triceratops one) became a full fledged autobot in japan's post-g1 fiction back in like... 2012? he was a takara redeco of a pcc guy.

While they're individuals rather than sub groups, these guys had no clear opposite:

    Jetfire
    Perceptor
    Doubledealer
    Artfire
    Stepper

    Euro Rescue Force

    Neo G1:

    Victorion

I always thought that Raiden sort of had an opposite in Devastator in my mind because they’re both slightly awkward very pre-Transformers-y six bot combiners.

    Shockwave
True, you could may argue reflector (or also Shockwave)
    Punch?
I’d just lump them in with the Targetmasters, they’re the Japan equivalent of the 86 “deluxes” that got rereleased as TMs
That one I don’t know about
    neo-Liokaiser?

I always had the Dinobots Vs the Insecticons in my head; mostly because I never really got to see much of the cartoon series (an early morning programme showed MTMTE in five minute chunks) and the first time I saw either was in an advert together. I remember thinking "it used to be cars Vs planes, now they can turn into animals" so I've always associated the two. For similar reasons I put the Jumpstarters opposite the original two triple changers, mostly because there were two of each and unique to their factions. Of course that changed in 86 with the Battle chargers and the new triples.
