I headed over to http://www.robothalloffame.org/nominate.php to see if Optimus Prime is still no.1 and shocking to see, he dropped to 2nd place   :rage:       ;_; .

Reading about the one that is #1 place, I'd say it deserves it.

 

I agree with Draven. Yes, Optimus is probably the top fictional robot, but you cannot take away the awesomeness that is that Automaton. Being built in the 18th century, no less, makes this one amazing. I understand how it works, but putting in that much effort and with the limited understanding of machinery they had at those times, Maillert truly built a masterpiece.

 

Yup. I just read up on it myself. That is amazing, especially given how old it is and what it can do.

 

Yeah, that thing is way cooler than a toy that turns into a truck. I like Optimus and all, but this Automaton is freaking amazing.

 

yeah the first one is actually pretty amazing. except that it's real. for robots that aren't real, Optimus obviously takes the cheese.

 

I gotta agree with the rest of the posts. Optimus is a great fictional character, but a real robot from the Th century trumps all. Plus who really cares what an internet ranking system says? If you like Optimus then why care where he is on a list? I find it odd how some people take it as a personal affront when a transformers aren't included or the top of a silly internet list?

Not pointing at you, Autobot 47, but this happens a lot. People get worked up over an Internet list that people vote on, when, really, who cares? Also, it's not like these polls are official in any sense; they can/are skewered beyond a typical margin of error, and losers who sit there and vote all day make up most of the results.

Now, if Optimus Prime was real and he wasn't at the top of the list, there would be an issue

Wow thanks for posting the link, that is one of the coolest things I've seen. Increadible for over two hundred years old. Very cool.

 

Wow. The Maillardet automaton is pretty much the coolest thing I've read about in a while. Putting that thing back together must have been like finding out that the Antikythera mechanism was a navigational aid for an ancient Greek giant attack robot. Well, maybe not that extreme, but it's a cool mental image.

Oh, and I guess Optimus is pretty neat, too.

 

This isn't just any list, though - it's the Robot Hall of Fame - part of Carnegie Mellon University.

Anyway, it appears that they select multiple robots each year, so Prime has a pretty good shot this year. CMU might be wise to make sure he makes it in this year. (Commander Data, Mega Man, and the Vision should get in, too.)
