I've been taking a look at how the film made $250 million in America despite being hated by critics and (to a lesser but still very visible extent) audiences. From what I found on old reddit posts people who were excited about the film felt like they were in the minority or that they had to defend themselves just for liking a film series.

So what made you excited for AoE?

Dinobots and Lockdown's spaceship. That's pretty much it.

    +John Dimaggio
    +John Goodman
    +Vintage Bee (That lasted)
+ Smaller scale (Ditto, but made it till China at least). End of the world scenarios are boring, Optimus Prime finding out humans are hunting Autobots good and having an excuse for his rage good.

I've watched films for stupider reasons. Revenge of the Fallen comes to mind.

Well I was excited for seeing robots with some form of personality in the film.

I liked Lockdown and the setup for other alien beings besides the humans and Transformers themselves.

I like Marky Mark, Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammar in the roles they were in regardless of the script.

That's me.... What really threw me off from the movie overall was how convoluted the mythology had become once the Knights and Creators were thrown in there without consideration. The Creators were mentioned without acknowledgement to the Allspark while the whole Knight thing conflicted with the established lore of Optimus beforehand.

Honestly, I wasn't that excited, in fact I nearly didn't see the film. However, since it had a smaller (therefore easier to write) group of Autobots, Optimus looked like he had a good arc, the villains looked cool and the whole thing looked like a decent follow up to DOTM, I decided to ask few members some questions about the film, about a week or two into its release, then decided to give it a shot. When I think about it, that's what brought me back to the forums after taking some time off for a while.

It seemed to get better reviews than TF 2 and 3.
Mark Wahlberg has been in good movies and John Goodman as Hound sounded promising.
I did think it had the worst voice cast of all the movies.
Lock down was an interesting villain but his voice was awful. As were Crosshairs and Drift.

Lockdown. I didn't care for Animated much as a whole but he was my favorite character to come from that series. I feel like AOE did him justice, just wish he didn't get cut in half.

This. And to be fair to AOE, it absolutely delivered on these.

They were in it way more than Jolt was in ROTF, and he's somehow a fan favorite.

Lockdown, the Dinobots, and the new human lead got me excited. Then later when it was hinted that Optimus would get a lil bit of actual character development, I got SUPER EXCITED. Still my favorite TF movie to this day.

    Lockdown..... Mm. That voice.

    That.... Giant convoluted gun-face

Dat mass.... shifting transformation from robot to vehicle mode.
