I'm watching a few different Japanes super-robots /mecha at the moment.
Brave Exkaiser, Machine Robo (Cronos), Combattler V and interested to hear people's recommendations (and like WHY you recommend it would be nice)

I so wish Gold Lightan had english subtitles, may just watch it anyway as it's a great show.

Thanks for your recommendations, also if you recommend something, can you please note if it has english subtitles or not, and if you mention one of the big ones like Robotech, Gundam, Brave/Yuusha etc, can you please mention which specific show including subtitle as lots of shows have similar names, or are part of a larger series/theme etc.

I'm really digging Combattler V, so will likely watch the other two companion shows that make up that trilogy.:D

Just to clarify so I don't make the same mistake twice, is this counting Transformers or not?

Some of my favorites and easy ones to get into

Modern version of a famous classic.

another update, but well done with a strong plot

    All time mecha classic

Mixture of Mecha series and Transformers

    Fun series

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann 1 Opening
Modern classic with a great start and a solid ending
    Gundam Seed OP1 HD
Good way to start a gundam series with good writing and similar story to the original
    Gundam 00 S1 Opening 1 [HD]
Nice animation and an interesting take
    - Neon Genesis Evangelion - Opening HD BluRay "A Cruel Angel's Thesis"
    Considered a anime classic now
    Big O Best Opening Ever!!!
Bruce Wayne gets a mecha instead of becoming Batman.
MEGAS XLR Opening - TV version
This series is a great Mecha tropes parody.

Also recommend the new Voltron on Netflix.

I think Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the best Anime shows I have ever seen, let alone giant Robot show. It loses it way a bit in the final two episodes because, well they ran out of money. But then we have Evangelion Rebirth ('Death' was basically a recap of the series) film to plug that gap.

And of course the new movies to reboot the series. But the original TV series is where to start.

I don't care one way or another.

Talk about any super robot shows you like man, thats why I started the thread.:)

The anal-retentive OCD forum labels on TFW force you to post in either "TF" or "off topic".
If post in TF, it gets moved to "off topic". If I post in off topic (basically never) and always people ask "does this include TF", because it's TF site obviously :D

Short answer is, it's off topic so talk about anything you like, including TF. However I am already aware of all TF shows, other super robot shows, not so much as 99% of them never played in my territories where I grew up, so I'm watching stuff now that I have never been able to before.

I mainly wrote the title as I did, as last time i asked a similar question people talked about everything BUT the topic I put in the title, so it was a total dead end thread with really no useful suggestions (for me) at all.
Hope this makes sense, it's my round about way of not having YET another topic moved to where it gets ignored. (Last week a topic on the animated 86 film concept art got moved to "comics"
because well.............. yeah I have no idea.

    Thanks for any recommendations!

I'm watching Brave shows pretty much in order, so long way from GaoGaiGar, why are people so crazy for that show? What makes it stand out from the crowd - other than cool bots, animation, power-up sequences (which most Brave/Sunrise shows have)?

What about the "Super Dimension Trilogy" (Macross, etc)? Not sure if that fits into the "big robot" category, but wanted to throw it out there.

Gaogaigar, has a lot of long term plots that come to fruition, interesting characters, and a main character you root for.
Even without the mechs the fights can be epic

It's tone is not as light as some other brave series.
You don't have to watch any other brave series to get Gaogaigar, it stands on it's own plotwise.

I would say the original SDF Macross (my second favorite anime ever, even though it is extremely dated) you can find it with subtitles. There was a dub but it never finished (the bright spot for me was Iijima Mari reprising her role as Lynn Minmay). Skip Robotech it is a complete mess in my opinion. If you want a more recent Macross go with Frontier, it has no legal release with subs or dubs.

    Gaiking: The Legend of Daikumaryu
    Kotetsushin Jeeg
    RahXephon
    Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventures
    Gravion

    Godannar!
It's one of those few series that's good in Japanese or English dub.
It's fun and at times becomes self aware of the ridiculous nature of super robot series, they even make a joke in the final episode where two girls show up in a combining robot with a feline theme and their commander breaks character shouting "Cat robots are 10 years outside of our genre!"

Neon Genesis Evangelion is top priority.

Gundam, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass (to an extent) and Full Metal Panic would be my top recommendations.

King of Braves Gaogaigar and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann are favorites because of the over the top optimistic nature of the heroes - courage always prevails. Gurren Lagann is especially interesting as Simon starts off somewhat like Eva's Shinji, paralyzed with doubt, and grows into his role as hero.
Big O might be recommended for the style alone - great character and mecha design.
Megan XLR is a great parody. It has tons of easter eggs like Peter Cullen and Frank Welker voicing leaders of warring factions of robots
