I'm sure a lot of people in the fandom would say:
"I have no specific goals, I just collect what I find is cool."
Well, you can post this if you want, but I'd like input from people that have a clearer direction to this hobby.

So, please share, what is the ultimate goal for your collection?

 

Ever since I started back into the hobby in 1999, my main collection goal has always been to have a complete run of Generation One figures. Aside from a few very minor things here and there, I can proudly say I completed this a year ago.

My main goal right now is to arrange a display that showcases my collection nicely. I don't have the resources available that some evidently do, but I can still come up with something nice within my means.

Classics - Generations is a bit of a mixed bag, both literally and figuratively. This is where I'd say "what's cool" - at least for now. Generations has been my "catch-all" line, if you will. What I mean by that is, while I like several lines that have came out over the years, I have downsized to where what "Unicron trilogy" figures I have left basically fit in there. Honestly, I'm a bit undecided where I want this portion of my collection to go and where I see it heading from Hasbro's end.

I've been expanding Alternators myself with customs, and I only have a few there left I want to do. I stayed on top of that portion of TFs, though - but the point is still the same, as I want a "complete" collection of them.

Masterpiece is the new portion for me. What was once a nice figure here and there is suddenly my main focus. This is where I see my collection heading.

For other things, I prefer to focus on figures that only appear in the media.

It may sound odd, but one of my goals for my collection is determining my goal. While I am somewhat focused, I've been giving a lot of thought lately to how I want to focus my collection, both with what I have and with what I plan to get (or not get) in the future. I tend to be a completionist, but not with everything.

 

good question. id say to get a good g1 and modern era representation of all G1 characters that I like. This includes most all USA from 1994-1987 and then characters from Headmasters, Masterforce, and Victory that I like.

so for example...

Optimus prime = have G1 reissue, have MP-10 = done
Jazz = have G1 reissue, have United Jazz = done
Prowl = have G1 reissue, have Henkei = done
Ironhide = missing G1 reissue, have iGear = 1/2 done
Ratchet = missing G1 reissue, have iGear = 1/2 done

and so on. now if they came out with a bitchin MP Jass or Prowl, Id probably have to get it, but id consider selling my united or Henkei at that point like I sold my classics ratchet and ironhide before iGear's showed up.

i just got into the Japanese stuff with the recent releases. I had a great time watching them with my son. I had no idea they even existed before tfw2005. For instance i recently picked up G1 reissue Stepper i found a good deal on and then overpaind for the United Stepper just cause he looked so cool and i liked his bio and Stepper is actually a nickname of mine... never heard of him either though before i joined tfw2005.

the new releases aren't for me. I was in on Classics, but the direction Hasbro is going I dont see myself making many more purchases at retail for myself. i buy some of the new stuff for my son, but he's still got a bunch unopened for presents and already has a bunch of opened movieverse, tfa, and now prime stuff. im planing on getting him the retail or bbts bruticus here soon. i have another son who is only 5 months, he will probably pick up where my older son leaves off so ill still buy some retail stuff for the next ten years or so.

I am really close to the complete movieverse already, i think all i need is que and he's so damn ugly i cant bring myself to buy him. id love the last HA wrecker though. Ill probably keep that line going for myself if the toys look good in the future. Just 1 version of a character is all I need, but I found that I have multiples of some.

My son and I liked Beast Wars, but I think that would be spreading my collecting to far to open up that line as well. Maybe someday. If they redid a Beast Wars line I'd be all about it for my sons. The few Beasts from Beast Hunters look good, but most of the other figures look horrible.

Ill skip the Unicron Trilogy for sure though.

 

Well, lets see... here are the current lines I have and what I want for each..

G1 - I have no clue what I want for this line short of a couple of staples that i'm sure you can figure out... seekers, megs, op, soundwave, shockwave, ect..

Beast Wars - I want the entire show cast from all seasons... I only need like 5 or so..

RiD - I have just about every retail one released short of the KB Toys Exclusives and the rare variants. To me i'm finished with this line.

Classics - I really want the entire G1 line in the classics series..I really have no clue why..

Movie Verse - I want the entire on screen cast in their best form.. I'm 13 away from finishing it.

Masterpiece - I want at least 1 of each that are out.

FoC - Not sure where this is going yet but, the good ones I'll be getting.

There are a few from several other lines that I want but, it's a select few not more than like 5 or 6 from each line including Unicron Battles, Alternators, ect and the only 2 figures I want from Animated is Ultra Magnus and Wreck-Gar.

So that is what I have planned for my collection. I actually have a complete list of all the ones I want short of the odd lines and G1. Since I know what I want to complete certain lines, then once I finish them I'll start to decide what I want from the G1 line.

1 of each mold of every Transformer ever made and I'm happy. Only 471 more to go + anything that hasn't been announced yet. Yaaaaaay! My wallet hates me.

 

To have fun. For me, any other goals are a little pointless and might lead me into getting something I don't want.

Having all the perfect characters for my favourite G1 figures as classics figures. This goal will never be reached. As figures like Tracks or Springer don't match that criteria, while Tracks was a near miss, Springer is no Springer at all. Or Wheelie... too large. Or the new Ultra Magnus, way too short.

Maybe this is on purpose. Because this way, people like me, will buy toys from Hasbro / Takara for a loooong time. If they did everything right at once, we would stop collecting after 2 or 3 years and be done with it.

 

For the movie line all I need is Hatchet, I even have the legends class Mirage for the autobots shelf and id like to get the DOTM Optimus with the abs.

But besides this I have been collecting the Shattered Glass line, I still want Divebomb to add to my Predacons and I want Rodimus as well.

In total I have 8 SG Autobots and 11 SG Decepticons, also trying to improve on my classics shelves, mainly my Decepticon one at this point.

Id also like to get my hands on a few 3rd party things, upgrade kits and so on as well as that nifty looking Fallen power core combiner to add to my classics Con shelf.

 

Season 1 G1 cartoon cast at MP scale. It'll be third parties that get me there quicker. 'Cons are pretty much done........

 

I have three goals:

Every G2-homaging classics toy.
Got all of Botcon 2010's offerings except for Sideswipe. Currently after Inferno, Skyfall and SG Sideswipe (Drench).

Every G1 Cassette
Almost there, too! Only need Flipsides. I could also use a better quality Raindance, Buzzsaw, Rewind and Squawktalk. I'll get the SG Cassettes eventually too. And then there's the issue of if I should start down the MP Cassette path.

I want all the various transforming Primes in existence.

 

First and foremost to have fun and to enjoy the hobby.
When it stops being fun, it's over.

I don't believe my collection will ever be complete and I like it that way.
The idea of a 100% complete collection depresses me, 'cause after it's complete, it becomes pointless... and I'll be stuck with a bunch of toys I don't care for.  

 

Finish my Animated collection. Still wants two exclusive and one Lucky Draw toy.

Of course, every Now&Then someone (FunPub) drops a new figure (e.g.: TFA Jackpot) I will buy it to keep my collection complete.

I guess I've got a fourth group too:

I collect the on-screen cast of a each movie, typically sticking to one toy per character (the "definitive" version of them). Still need Leader Brawl...

 

My goal with my collection is to impress the ladies and be the envy of my neighbors.
I joke. No, really, my collection is a non-alcoholic relief from stress.
I buy whet I like, and I like alot, but I do not buy to resale or as an investment.
I buy for fun and leisure.
I have a slightly completest soul, so I have to be careful or else that will drive me to compulsion to complete a series, and that leads to unneeded stress.
Example: right now, I have 4 of the 5 TMNT Mechs, and every time I see them on the shelf, I get a bit OCD and go to eBay to find the Leo Mech...then I get sidetracked finding other stuff.
But: I recently bought the Classics TMNT Leo, and if I do get the rest that would be great, but if not, oh well.
I buy for fun.
I used to buy every Transformers figure I'd see until half-way into the movie figures when I realized how much I actually hated them.

 

To have some cool modern day childhood memories.
If that means I get a complete G1 lineup MP collection, that's great. If not, that's cool too.

 

I hade one to have all the G1 in mib and moc state. I then took away Pretenders, MM and Acction masters. Now I will most likely be downsizing some more stuff.

Maybee just do show characters. I have not decided yet on how I want and what I want to do.

 

My TWO favorite series are G1 and BW, so this is my plan.

G1: MP ONLY! With this new release schedule, I'll be ok letting go of all my G1's


BW: I plan on picking up my favorite characters again. I need TM Cheetor, Rattrap, Tigatron, Waspinator, Depth Charge, TM Ravage and Inferno

 

Right now my goal is to complete the Prime Cyberverse line (even if it requires a few imports). I also have a few animated figures I need to get. I will still get new figures in the Prime line that interest me.
