Quick question. I recently bought a dvd player that I made region O so that I could purchase the Headmasters dvd set to watch. As I was scrolling some auctions it said you must have a PAL compatible tv. Does that mean my tv won't work? My television is about 2 years old and a Magnavox so will it be ok?
Yeah. PAL stands for Phase Alternating Line. It's a color encoding system used in broadcast television systems. We use NTSC here in the States.
Thanks for the replies. Just to be clear I need a region O dvd player and a pal converter correct? Would something like this work? http://cgi.ebay.com/TV-AV-Video-Sys...ryZ73390QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Yes, but it going the wrong way. The biggest problem is that Pal runs at 24 frames per second and about 525 lines horizontal. Versus NTSC is 29.97 frames per second at 325 lines horizontal. Which means there are some major issues going from one to the other. Your best bet is to region free your computer since a computer does not care pal or ntsc.
Some DVD players will automatically scale the video, so try them in your player before you spend money on a converter.
PAL also runs at a slightly higher resolution than NTSC, if your TV is not compatible the video might have the top and bottom lopped off your screen. (Basically its the reverse of the old NTSC console on a PAL tv, we used to get black bars on the top and bottom of our screens.
Nothing should be cut off the image if it is properly converted. Since pal and ntsc are both 4X3 aspect ratio signals. Let me know if I am wrong. Which means the problem is in your TV and not the signal.
