What if in Transformers 2007 Bumblebee was actually the Volkswagen Beetle he beats up in the film.

And then instead of becoming a new Camero he becomes a 2007 Convertible Beetle.

That might have been a cooler move IMO.

Actually, I almost would have preferred 'Bee spend the first half of the movie as a Beetle, and then switch to a cleaned-up '77 Camaro for the second half.

The part where he's the crap rusty camaro might be more humorous in that you have Satan's Beetle chasing Sam around and then promptly engaging in a police chase running from Barricade (plus I'm sure jokes about how uncool a bug is for picking up chicks in place of the fancy engine in a crap car scene where Sam swoons over Mikayla's form), but he'd still upgrade to the Concept Camaro anyway. Don't forget a big reason the 2007 movie happened is it's functionally part car commercial for GM (and hilariously dated since of the three vehicles actually purchasable at the time, the Pontiac Solstice and GMC Topkick have long since been discontinued).

A big part of Bumblebee's character that the Bay movies failed to utilize is that he's typically on the smaller side, despite his notable bravery he's not a powerhouse like Optimus or even ones like Sideswipe, as Animated Bumblebee puts it: He's small but scrappy.

In the Bay films he's basically like every other typical warrior Autobot until TLK inexplicably gave him the ability to rebuild himself, his only real flaws are his lack of a voice (which doesn't seem to hinder him whatsoever) and his occasional immaturity that only seems to crop up at particular moments.

Interestingly enough there are renders of a Bayverse VW Bee floating around out there from when the Bumblebee movie was still a full-blown prequel.

    Looks neat.

That design on the left is absolutely hideous. Bayverse Bee just doesn't work as a Beetle in my opinion.

This left concept art is horrendous, I know that it was likely a preliminary concept, but as an idea, the complexity of the bayverse just doesn't feel..."right", with a simple beetle.

Thanks for reminding me what a cutie BeetleBee was. The production team did a fantastic job cute-ifying him while keeping BayBee’s classic traits.

Did anyone ever buy that shitty little solstice anyway? Other than hairdressers I mean.

But anyway, I think it would have been better if Bee spent half the movie as an old bug, before getting his upgrade. But the new beetles look shit so going from old beetle to new Camaro would have been best.

Man I kept my eyes peeled for the Topkick and Solstice back in those days. I think I maybe saw the Topkick once leaving a McDonalds in southern Kentucky as my family was pulling in during a summer roadtrip (no idea if it was the Ironhide package or not, didn't get a good look at the running lights or tailgate), but I've NEVER seen a Solstice in person.

I do agree it would have been better if BB had stayed a bug for the first half. While the way the movie works is fine, it really would have been funny if instead of Mr. Witwicky taking his son to a sketchy used car dealer (with the Porsche joke and all), the Witwicky parents simply had been hyping Sam up for weeks about the 'awesome' car they'd already bought for him...which was of course a beat up Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle.

Sam: "A crappy Beetle? What's so awesome about this?"

Dad: "The awesome price we got it for! Managed to spend enough on a working car and still have enough for the renovation of the upstairs bathroom!"

Cue scenes of Sam driving up to the Football pitch trying to look like he's driving something that wasn't found in barely functional condition behind a car shop in the run down section of town.

    Second image is broken lol
    But personally I don't love bumblebee's G1 design
I do like aspects of it but I think a hybrid of different designs is the way to go

I mean, it'd make less sense honestly. Some typical high school guy is gonna want a classic Camaro as his first car over and old Beetle.

With the plot of the first movie, the Camaro works better.

However, with the plot of Bumblebee, the Beetle makes more sense.

It wouldn't have changed the movie, but I feel like it would have been nice. Plus, it would have been cool to have gotten it as a toy in 07 as a result. If nothing else, it would have been nice if he has used it as a disguise for a quick minute (like Jeep Bee in the 6th movie). It was neat to have that one Beetle cameo for a second 07, but it didn't do much for me.

I think having two distinct alt modes would have made his upgrade have a bit more importance. Bee upgrading because he's insecure and vain was a funny moment, but a very short-lived one. If you compare it to the big NO MORE HIDING moment of Optimus reformatting in AoE, it's just not the same. (although I kinda wish he'd just became a clean version of that body in that scene and only got the Knight body once he got the ship later, but that's another issue)

No thank you lol. I'd be ok having him be an 80s beetle for the first part of the film, but then upgrade to the concept Camaro. The newer beetles really don't fit the esthetic of the film. Besides, he's supposed to upgrade himself not downgrade lol. Action and chase scenes don't quite have the same effect when a new beetle is at the center of it.

This was early concept art when indeed BB was a full blown prequel still and yeah what a upgrade we got.
For me TFA, Devastation and some others I can't thing of, but mainly TFA and TF Devastation are the only two G1 (VW like) Bee designs I really like.
