I always thought the "con" suffix in many Transformers names and terms meant "Construct"
Except that the Decepticons were the warriors of Cybertron and the Autobots were the builders (or construction workers) of Cybertron.
Not construct as in construction work.
Construct as a noun is something that has been "constructed".
Sometimes people use the word to refer to golems, robots and other artificial beings.
Oh! I gotcha.
Like the Idea that Decepticon means: Deceptive Converter
icons of deception, imo
it's clearly the product of a coke-fuelled board meeting in the early 80s. What follows is a transcript of a secret tape recording smuggled out of Hasbro HQ by undercover Tonka employees around the time of Transformers' release. It's contents have never been made public before today.
Marketing Exec (A): "yo man, we heading to Kinky Tinto's for cocktails or what?"
Advertising Guy (B): "hey dude, i gotta *SNIFFFFFFFFFFFF* think of a name for these toy robot things."
A: "ah shit yeah. they goodies or baddies? *SNIFFFFFFFFF* ahhhh!"
B: "That's a negative Iceman - we're already doing 'bots' for the other lot"
A: "*SNIFFFFFF*how about Eviltrons?"
B: "that is terrible. *SNIFFF* *KOFF* why do we pay you again?"
A: "uuh. Decepticons?"
B: "that's shit too. ah fuggit'll do. lets go get laid! *SNIFFFFFFF*"
[sound of high fives being exchanged]
A: *SNIFFFFFFF!* *SNIFFFFFFF!*
B: "by the way, you seen these awesome toys that turn into rocks yet? the kids'll go crazy for them. i'll have my people send some over."
important legal disclaimer: the creators of transformers may not have been on hard drugs. no, seriously, i mean it. um, and they were probably nice guys too.
It's an old Cybertronian word meaning a horrible fighter who is easily defeated.
That's what I think.
I have an idea that is partially right that the Decepti is deception. But Con could mean
anything from converters, conniving, conners (or con-artists),or etc. So I say its whatever
you think it is.
Its short for BAdd ASS robots.
Its cybertronian for susan boyle...
This! Towers high & mighty (gestaltlike) above all else.
I always took it as they never called themselves "Decepticons"
But when the civil war started the Autobots gave them the name, and it stuck.
I saw it as "Deceptive Cons" Con as in convicts
You know, the autobots would view the seperatists as cons, or convicts for breaking away.
And about "Autobots" Im not sure about anything else.. but the Movie it's definitely stated that "Autonomous Robotic organisms" is their race. similar to ours "Homo Sapiens" So yeah, everyone who isn't a Decepticon is an Autobot, cause they view them as something else entirely...the threat.
But thats the way I perceive it, I take liberties with making it sound cooler in my head, since no explanation will be given in the films.
Here's what I think it means:
DEfensive / CEntralized Paramilitary / TImocratic CONverter
a nod to their G1 origins as military robots.
CEtralized Paramilitary =
I've envisoned them as Cybertron's planetary police force before the war has well as a reference to the factions' subgroups.
In the philosophy of Plato, it is a form of government in which ambition for power and glory motivates the rulers (which Decepticon(s) have always hungered for power and glory?)
Their ablilty to transform (DUH).
Deceptive Converters or Deceptive Constructs (both mentioned earlier) sound good.
"Deceptive Constructs" is what comes to my mind.
