Just a situation I was talking about amongst friends about their respective sports teams, but this could apply to other things like shows or hobbies or whatever you are/were passionate about. Example, if you follow a terrible sports team for so long, would you cut all viewing on TV, buying their products, etc, so they would learn their lesson and hope to improve? Or, just keep supporting them out of loyalty?
Pittsburgh guy here who dealt with the Pirates being losers 20 straight years. I don't buy in to the whole "I bleed so and so's colors for life!" nonsense. If you want my hard earned money you need to put a contender on the field. Going to games isn't cheap these days and I refuse to go and watch a minor league team compete against an all star team. It's just not fun to watch.
I stand by my teams through thick and thin. Obviously, I feel a lot less concerned about setting aside time to watch a team's games if they are having a bad year, but I'm not going to bandwagon elsewhere. Luckily, the teams I follow religiously haven't had a lot of terrible seasons since I was a kid who was too young to really follow the sport. I started watching Steelers games every week the same season Big Ben started. I started watching the Penguins the year before they got Sidney Crosby. The Pirates still aren't that great, but I am not that into baseball anyone. I stuck by Penn State football during the scandals that I will not name and the few years of Bowl Game ineligibility, but they still didn't have a losing record during those seasons, and now they are having arguably their best season in the last decade.
I don't know how that feels. Ask a Leafs fan if you can find one. Seriously though, I can't help but laugh whenever they do suck. Enjoy and savour the barrage of funny trash talk. that's also part of the fun anyway.
I toggle between choices 2 and 3. I'm still a fan and will always stick with my squad, but if they're terrible (like the 49ers) and don't seem to have an interest in winning, I follow occasionally. It's pointless to invest half of a day in a game when you already know the outcome. In the 49ers' case, watch the first half and then turn it off... and don't watch the news later unless you fancy disappointment.
Grrrrrr..... Anyways, I check in on them from time to time. For the past few years, even though the Leafs haven't done or been much, they have been entertaining. Same with the Jays from 2009-2014. If my sports' teams are in the gutter, I still have my hobbies and toys...and they forever will love me.
well i don't have a team strictly. usually i want new york teams to win since i'm from new york, also fan of the raiders, but my brother is with everyone against the colts and the broncos.....
sticking to teams thru good n bad times says more about you than it does about em. to me its not even about loyalty because loyalty can be blind which makes it dumb. its about what u identify with the team even when theyre losing because of it.
I meant for these to be together. My bad I should have put a line on it or something. Remember when MTL lost 10-1? EDIT: lost 10-fucking 0!!!! FUCK did they suck day. I went in the thread specifically to find funny shit but alas I was the first one to make fun of them. btw you're a dying breed man. I meet a lot of Bruins, Flyers, Penguins fans around the office but never a Leafs fan. Or maybe that person doesn't want to meet me... I don't know.
You and my dad are blood brothers when it comes to the Raiders (The blood being black and silver!) As for me, I'm a Jets fan. Although I've pretty much given up on this season and see what'll happen in 2017-18.
My home team is the Bengals. There's a reason a number of people around here are Steelers fans instead, suffice to say.
If my team sucks I thank my lucky stars that I don't actually support any particular sports team. That way I can always root for the winnar!
If my team sucked ass at what they were doing, just be the one who's actually good so others can learn.
The only team I really care about is the Spurs, and have fortunately had solid teams since David Robinson joined in the late 80s. While every season hasn't been the greatest, they have all been competitive and have brought home 5 championships. If they started losing miserably, I would still probably support them in hopes they improve, but as Noobimus Prime mentioned, you kind of need to win so I get some value for my money, instead of some blind allegiance.
I don't really believe that one is allowed to change their team allegiance. If the team is bad then sure you don't have to buy their merch or go to the games, but you can't stop being a fan. I guess having an alternate team (preferably in the other league / conference) is ok, but you still have to give preference to your original team.
Leafs are one of the top 3 most valuable NHL franchises. I can guarantee there are a ton around. No, my main allegiances are: 1. New York Rangers 2. Drew Brees/Saints* *Once Brees retires, I'll follow the NFL on a rare occasion. He's the main reason I started watching the NFL after the '91 Giants SB win. I'll always root for the other NFL (Giants/Jets) and MLB (Yankees/Mets) NY teams, but never the Islanders or the Nets. This started bc I was having a discussion with an Islanders fan and basically said that the Isles won't see another dollar of his unless there are some major changes. I'll never question his loyalty, but like Noobimus Prime said, professional sports aren't cheap these days.
