What collection should I collect the G1 transformers or the Present Transformers: Movie toy & Prime toy line?

Help, I'm starting to collect transformers since 2006 but apparently I think G1 transformers are starting to get extremely rare (but i don't have any of them yet, both sides),

but I do have the movie transformers (autobots) and I think I'm still missing [the three arcee, mudflap, skids, leadfoot, topspin & jazz]

so should i get the G1 or the transformers Prime......

I actually started off my collection with the Transformers Prime line and have gone from there. One little separate spot is just movie figures. Then have another spot with just Generations stuff and older classics and universe figures. I do have some stuff from the Unicron trilogy mixed in there too so...

Just get what you like. :D *

There is no right or wrong may to make a collection. Just buy what you like. That being said, an all-G1 collection will get expensive quick. An all-Masterpiece collection will also get you an all-G1 cast and with superior modern engineering, though it will also become expensive to track down some pieces like MP-10.

personally, new toys lose their luster quick. I still buy some now and then though. the prime line was pretty disappointing quality-wise to me though

Whatever makes you happy. Get what you want from each line if you prefer. I don't really want to influence you though, but personally, I lose interest in movie stuff faster. I always go back to G1 and CHUG. I'm still very much interested in TFP though.

when i started collecting transformers, I collected everything. After a while, however, I found that I was just accumulating a bunch of stuff I didn't even really like. I decided that I like G1 the best, but the actual G1 figures are 1. expensive, and 2. not as cool as their more modern figures (in my opinion).

So I settled on collecting one modern version (but G1 style) of every G1 character.
The classics / universe line is just that. They are modern renditions of the G1 line. So I sold everything that wasn't a modern style G1 figure, and now I just have a mix of universe/classics/masterpiece and 3rd party figures.

For me, it works just fine. In particular, I like that my style of collecting has an end eventually. Once I have 1 version of every G1 character, I'm good. There will always be upgrades, and cool third party figures that come along, and if I like them better than the one I currently have, I'll just sell the old one, and buy the new one.

    but that's just me.

Obviously the classic, "whatever you like."

When I got back into the game and just lurked here before joining, I jumped into CHUG and 3rd Party to fill that out. Sold all of that stuff and now stick to strictly G1, which is expensive as fuck, especially if you have a taste for better pieces. I wouldn't jump back in to anything else really except for Kronos who stokes a very special nostalgia feeling with my G1 Jetfire I had as a kid.

Buy what you think is cool man. That's the only way to have something you care about.

I grew up with G1, so I've had far more time collecting that than the other lines currently available.

That being said, G1 has the most breadth and variety of any transformers line. Sometimes you need to collect multiple lines just to get what G1 offered 25-30 years ago:

Unique alt-modes: not all autobots turn into cars, not all decepticons turn into planes or tanks (ex. Perceptor transforms into a microscope)

    City-bots

    the Dinobots

A relatively huge selection of earth alt modes, futuristic earth alt modes, and cybetronian alt modes

    Combiners

    -master gimmicks

I collect both, but they need to be at separate times as collecting Generation 1 figures are far too expensive.

I haven't bought a G1 figure in months because of the cost, especially when you're looking at ones complete, with paperwork, packaging, etc.

The current stuff on the shelves is still fun to collect. A lot of good figures out there for $10 a pop. No where near as durable or as nostalgic, but still Transformers.

Wow, this is a very strange question. I mean, the difference in style, engineering and price is so massive, it's like asking if you should buy an NES or a Wii-U.

I mean, the advantages of collecting modern TFs are fairly obvious, so unless you're hardcore Gen 1 nostalgia....something or another, you should probably just go with those.

Me? I'm only semi-hardcore. With a couple of exceptions, I only buy reissues.
