As I have mentioned before, I find it very interesting what different people deem as "deal breakers" when they evaluate whether or not they will purchase a figure. This thread is in no way to judge anyone for their thoughts or feelings, as what we like and dislike is very subjective and this fandom seems to emotionally invest themselves heavily in their choices, so lets keep it civil. While many times the reason to pass on a figure is character specific. For example, many have made a note that they can't get past the head flap on TW's Coolsville. Others have noted they passed on Inferno for lack of leg detail. Feel free to cite specific examples or more high level dislikes, such as someone who may pass on any figure that has light piping, for example. Discuss!

Scale. I know the fandom is splintered on what is the right scale or if scale itself is even important (clearly it's not to some). But to me, out of scale (i.e. *my* preferred scale) = useless. If it looks weird in a display, it's a wasted purchase. Doesn't mean it's a bad figure, but it doesn't fit my collection's needs in any way.

"Extreme Toon Simplicity" would likely come in second - only because it's a pet peeve to be slavishly faithful to something that was done in a haphazard rush.

Poor articulation would likely be third, because I like to pose figures.

For me I have to like the aesthetics of both modes (vehicle and robot).

I'm with you on this. Scale is my #1 dealbreaker, assuming I like the design/quality of a figure. I can't have a super high quality, awesome looking Grimlock in my collection if he comes up only to MP-10's chest in my display. Nope.

Lack of articulation and gappy figures. I don't want to be able to see through a figure. Scale too. Some figures alittle off are ok but like he said up there. Mp8 type stuff is a no no

    Partsforming is my dealbreaker.

I've managed to get myself to accept slight partsforming such as combiners (hands/feet)or unnecessary parts for an alt mode. But when an alt mode isn't complete because a piece has to be attached to it, I just find it to be lazy engineering.

what he said. For me there is a fine line between too toon simple, and too much detail... and it's one of those things that I know when I see it. MP Inferno was a great example of that for me.

I don't know that I have any hard and fast rules. Generally speaking it has to be a character I want, first and foremost. I have no interest in MMC's Titanika because I have no desire to have a Beast Machines character in my collection.

Next, poor quality can doom a figure. I want a Cliffjumper, but I'm not hearing to many good things about that one from ACE.

Similarly, if it's good quality but doesn't strike me as the right design or right version of a character I'll pass. An example would be MMC'S Turben. I'm sure he'll turn out to be a good Whirl, but he's not an accurate IDW More Than Meets the Eye Whirl.

Finally, if it's not the "correct" size. This is hugely subjective, for most people, I imagine. But my personal preferences are dictated by an internal bot-mode scale that has nothing to do with the Sunbow chart and places most Transformers at roughly Voyager size. So I'll pass on a lot of stuff that's too small for me; this whole 3P Legends craze is passing me by. I'll skip just as many MPs, though, for being too big (so far, only a couple of the MP cars have made it into my collection).

-Grossly under or over scaled. A little deviation can be fine- the cartoon was never 100% consistent- but generally I like to stay close to it.
    - Poor QC
    -Ugly faces
-Funky proportions that aren't accurate to the source material
    -Hollowness

    1. Price (this should be obvious)
    2. Scale (got to scale with my collection)
    3. Durability (I don't want a glass figure, it's got to be sturdy

Scale: Everybody goes together. Everybody. So if it doesn't work in scale it doesn't work.
And we all have our own idea about how big a particular character should be in ransformers. in TF world, scale is totally subjective.

Headsculpt: If that head is not on point, the whole thing falls apart.

Poor articulation: Maybe it's beautiful and amazing but I put a LOT of value on articulation of the robot mode. A severe lack of useful articulation will make it almost worthless to me.

And then there's a whole bunch of really subjective stuff, like I can't say it's specifically MP Inferno's lack of detail on the legs - I just don't like it overall. And MP Megatron V2's lack of silver paint is a total dealbreaker, but that just goes for him.

This is really interesting. There are a lot of resounding themes here. I didn't think about it when I posted but I think I might give the thread a couple of days and then tally up the results and see what kind of interesting trends we see. I guess an engineer(nerd) can even data mine information out of toy collecting.

    - not more or less MP scaled
    - bad head / face sculpts
    - nonsensical deviation from toon accuracy on otherwise toon-inspired figures
    - excessively busy / greeblied-up designs
    - partsforming when no precedent in cartoon or G1 toy exists
    - fake parts with little aesthetic advantage
    - likeliness of Takara making a character in the near future
    - poor QC reports for companies known to do second runs

    1) Doesn't sufficiently evoke the character for me for one reason or another.
    2) Scale all wrong for my collection.
    3) Aesthetics too different to rest of my collection.
    4) Hoping for a better version from someone else.

Lately I've gotten so used to ankle tilts that I might actually put "no ankle tilts" in as a category. It's seriously hampering my enjoyment of the MP-11 mould!

    Toon-accuracy on any part derived from a real-world alt-mode.

Colors that are neither toon nor toy-accurate.

"Inconsistent" alt-mode updates. (Like updating some members of a team but not others, or changing some members' to fictional ones but changing others' to real ones). Or changing the "role"----like little sports car to big sedan, or sleek fighter to heavy bomber.

Yes for me, it's definitely face sculpt, gaps in legs and arms on small bots especially. I can get over ankle tilt, but if it's fixable like lupus, I can get over it. Then scale is a must. And I'm somewhat flexible here as long as it's not legends class vs mp. For instance, I think of blitzwing as seeker size, but I can live with him a little larger as kfc did and I'll be perfectly happy.
