My wife has been watching it. I found myself bored so I stopped paying attention in the middle of the second episode. best thing about it was the soundtrack.

They poured their budget on the first fight. Second fight, not so much.

Earl and Fairy - I guess this is another forgotten series from 2008 (certainly more so than Kannagi), and one I only came across a few months ago. I finally got around to watching it (since it’s Victorian era with fairies premise sounded intriguing). Now that I’ve seen it, it’s fine; definitely held back by being unfinished. I liked Lydia, and didn’t mind the other characters (other than maybe Kelpie), but not enough gets accomplished by the end to make them or their short (and incomplete) journeys feel like they’re must-watch. It doesn’t help that there are a number of instances of magical-babble making scenes hard to follow, and the unusual fact that the main villain……doesn’t actually appear in the show. He gets mentioned, and the characters deal with an underling antagonist towards the end of the series, but that’s it. Another thing that makes the show feel unfulfilling by the end. This isn’t a bad show or anything, but it isn’t the easiest to recommend when it doesn’t have the time to accomplish much.

Nice for them, but there's a major contingent factor that you're completely ignoring here.

Yes, the Japanese markets have made significant gains, but the reason they're able to claim third spot with only their own domestic market fueling the vast majority of those numbers is because the Western cinemascape is still f'ed. They're still struggling to claw back numbers after the pandemic drove people away, and the prevalence of home streaming becoming a more and more enticing alternative. Japan hasn't adopted streaming media, so their cinemas see no competition.

A $152M haul is nothing against the peak market of ~5 years ago, when the major US studios could cumulatively draw ~3B+ in sales domestically.

You seem to keep trying to paint anime as this burgeoning mainstream success story, but the fact of the matter is, it's still quite niche.

Slam dunk just broke a record in korea. Every week in the japan box office 80% of the films are anime or live versions of anime. Top 3 biggest films in japan last year are anime.

Demon slayer movie, one piece and others are big hits in other countries. It's bigger than you think. Some countries see anime same as animation and don't shove them to fathom event releases unlike america that still frowns on it.

Also, America is ahead of Japan not below it.

    That's not what I said.

The result of every other market being depressed is that it allows Japan into the rankings. China is also a major cinema market, but they went hardcore on pandemic lockdowns, so I assume their numbers are f'ed.

Also because TheRossman wrote a quote-on-quote "REVIEW" on GaoGaiGar and just absolutely talked complete trash about it while comparing it to Gurren Lagann and saying a bunch of shimata about how Gurren Lagann is better and how GaoGaiGar is just the biggest piece of overrated F
