Lupin III Episode 0 First Contact - I loved the noir vibes this one had with its distorted imagery, a lot of darks used, some interesting camera angles, and the like. I know the whole thing was just Lupin making the story up, but outside of the way they introduced Goemon, it really could have worked as an actual origin story for the initial trio. The soundtrack kicked ass yet again and outside of some really weird animation errors, it was a solid tale all around. Some areas also felt like they belonged to a James Bond film.

I have to say, so far, while some specials have been weaker than others, nothing has been at true bomb in my eyes, which is a rarity for an anime series with such longevity. Maybe I've just missed the big stinkers thus far because Discotek has been focusing on the best of the best. We'll see.

One last thing to note, I can't help but laugh at the TV commercials on the disc that advertise this special as airing at exactly 9:03PM. Not 9:00, or 9:05, but 9:03. Talk about a weird time to start a show at.

I have some what I thought were stinkers like Eternal Mermaid, Crisis in Tokyo, Elusiveness of the Fog, Princess of Breeze, Seven Days Rhapsody and Twilight Gemini. Reasons ranges from recycled plots to bad writing.

Tokyo Crisis is my least favorite, but I didn't think it was a bomb. I thought Twilight Gemini was pretty good.

The two I put in bold aren't on BD yet.

So far this season the definite highlights for me are Witch from mercury and Bocchi the Rock - and coincidentally they both air the same day and star socially awkward protagonists.

Bocchi is so relatable and makes me laugh a lot, and of course I'm always excited for how the gundam story will turn out each episode.

If Netflix wants to make themselves useful someone needs to adapt Yonbi and Ruler of the Land. Some of this fight scenes would be epic animated.

Lupin III Voyage into Danger - Seriously, these two titles are getting annoying. Just pick one!! :lol  Anyway, this one was quite good for the most part, though it did drag a tad in the middle. Nothing too bad though. The villains were an interesting lost, but why the hell would Zenigata join up with Lupin in the first place? I understand he was drinking his sorrows away, but that was just odd. Beyond that and Goemon yet again surviving my plot convenience, I liked this one a lot. Seeing various countries contact Lupin after he stole the nuclear sub wanting to buy it from him was priceless. I could totally see that being a thing.

I spent the better part of the past week and a half watching Birdy the Mighty: Decode. I’m not entirely sure why I hadn’t watched it until now; I guess the premise didn’t grab me before.

I ended up liking it, probably the first season a little more than the second. Birdy is a cool, badass character. Tsutomu probably annoys a lot of people, but he’s not the worst. There are moments where he gets fairly unlikable, but he improves over time.

The biggest problem is the ending, or lack thereof. So much is left unexplained and unresolved at the end of season 2, and I can’t deny that it left an awkward taste in my mouth. Given it’s been 13 years, and this isn’t a crazy popular anime nowadays, I expect we’re probably stuck with what we got. Whether it’s still worth watching despite that is hard to say, even if I largely liked it myself.

Yeah, series didn't sell well enough to warrant a third season. I believe the manga's still ongoing. Or at least, continued well past where the anime ended up.

Yuugo Kanno's soundtrack for it is amazing, especially Birdy's anthem. Now far better known for his work on the JoJo series (starting from Part 3). You can definitely hear the similarities between the saxophone riffs between Side Birdy and Giorno's Theme.

I liked both seasons, for different reasons. First season was better balanced, but the second season was more emotionally raw and hit like a freight train at multiple points.

Kazuki Akane needs to direct more stuff. Escaflowne, Noein, and Birdy were all top-tier in my books.

Another day, another Lupin III special. This time we watched The Island of Assassins. It wasn't the most thrilling Lupin special, but I enjoyed it. It did make you feel bad for Zenigata because that man goes through some crap in this one. On the other hand, Goemon was kind of pointless and seemed to do absolutely nothing.
