What’s more important to you, a new version of a character having their iconic alt mode or their iconic color scheme? Or does it vary from character to character for you?

Let’s just assume the bot mode ends up with a similar shape either way.

Generally speaking, it's the color scheme. I would like the alt mode to stay somewhat similar, but I'm not too picky about it. For instance, I always want Optimus to be a big red truck, but I don't really care if he's a flat nose or a long nose or a fire engine or whatever. I do, however, want his color scheme to remain consistent since that's visually one of the most defining characteristics.

I'd actually go with alt mode, and even that has some flexibility. If a new color scheme looks better than the classic colors, then the designers ought to roll with what looks better.

    Colour scheme.

Nothing worse than a repaint meant to be the same character. Goes against everything the Seekers believe in!!

I'd say colors, because even if Optimus turns into something like a boat or aircraft, if he has similar colors / design cues, we can still recognize him.

Colours. That's the distinguishing part of a transformer's visual identity.

For some characters, alt modes should be similar, like Starscream should always be a jet, Optimus should be a large truck of some kind (lorry or fire engine, it doesn't matter as long as it's some kind of large truck like vehicle), but the type of jet or truck can change, though most can recieve new alt modes, like Megatron, Soundwave etc. Someone like Jazz should be some kind of sports car, but doesn't always have to be a porsche. And so on.

Alt mode is the more important thing. The colours can be adjusted, made darker, adjusted to the alt mode, as you could do a lot of "tweaks" with the paint scheme and the figure will still be easily identifiable.

I’d say it varies from character to character.

Optimus’s color scheme is far more important than his alt mode.

Same for all the Seekers except Starscream, since their colors are pretty much the only consistent thing for them where Starscream has had radically different colors but pretty much always the jet alt mode.

Megatron is a rather interesting case since he’s had several iconic alts and colors. Clearly Barneytron is best but he’s technically not quite the same as all these other megs.

I’d argue alt mode, simply because we’ve had characters that shake up the colour scheme yet are still badass. Armada Starscream, for example, replaced blue with black for a very cool yet still familiar colour scheme. In the same series Optimus went from red to black and looked badass.

Alt modes are probably more iconic due to them being half the character basically, but there’s wiggle room. Optimus has been several different kinds of trucks, from semis to fire engines and more. Then again Megatron has been practically everything under the sun.

Really, if the redesign is good enough and in line with the character, both colours and alt mode can be changed however much they’re needed to fit the character.
