I did this guy a while back but only recently started posting my stuff so I figured I'd put him up as well. I wanted to give him more of a G1 look without painting the entire figure. I like to be able to transform and pose the figures without worrying about the paint getting damaged. I decided to stick to the colors from G1 so, primarily blue with silver/grey sections. Then red and gold/yellow for details. I also used black on the tires and the intake vents on his face. I figure black gets a pass since its not exactly a color. This is the unpainted version The unpainted pick is from tfwiki since I didn't have a photo of the figure unpainted. Just for fun I also took pics of him in "mech mode" its totally not official but it kinda works.
Not sure why you felt black needed a pass, but I hate to break it to you, black IS a color. What else would it be? It's not a farm animal?
Black is often referred to as being a shade rather than a color since technically black is an absence of color (little to no light being reflected). The original G1 Soundwave does not have any black parts that I noticed but since black kind of fades into the background rather than popping out at you I figure it really doesn't disrupt the overall look. Lol farm animal, just imagine it. Little clouds of darkness roaming grassy fields, slowly sucking the green out of the grass.
I like the idea and you did a good job. I customised WFC Soundwave into a WFC Blaster last year and I loved the Tamiya titanium silver paint I used on his legs and the improvement that made over the stock grey plastic (and it's actually a really robust paint). I was on the fence about using it on my United WFC Soundwave because he wasn't a cheap figure. But, you may have convinced me to give him a bit of an upgrade.
Thanks for the comments guys. This figure looks very flat with its standard paintjob. The light grey plastic is really not visualy impressive, silver looks much better. I'm particularly happy with how the weapons and face came up. Cant believe his guns come unpainted. Then again, since I enjoyed painting him its kinda a value add
Black and white are colors, they are just highly evolved. Some say that in the distant past black and white were just like other colors, only able to stimulate some of the color receptors of animals eyes. However they have evolved beyond that now. They have if you will "transcended" the normal limits of light and become like MIGHTY INKY GODS.
