I revised the embossed details to follow the sculpt of the overlapping flaps instead of disregarding it, and got everything separated into a two-piece configuration. I'm not satisfied with how this design will end up with the backs of the wings looking asymmetrical in bot mode (the ends will be white on one and silver on the other). I want to figure out a solution to that but will print it as it is to see how well it works like this.
Here's the print of the model shown in my last post. I decided to use some glow-in-the-dark filament as it was a closer match to Wheeljack's color than the other filament colors (white and ivory) that I have. Please ignore the goober/line on the back of the silver piece. Things are working well for the most part, but I think I will have to go thicker. I want to fix the exposed silver on the back of the one wing, and as it is now the white is so thin that it's translucent. You can even see the glob of super glue through the white layer on one wing. So I need more depth to fix those things.
loving these progress pics. will you be selling these directly (since youre trying to color match a bit) or only through shapeways?
Just through Shapeways. I'm very reluctant to do direct sales after seeing how much trouble some other people have had with it, combined with my tendency to procrastinate and general laziness, lol. I just figured it would be cool to color match on these test prints as much as possible. Here's a set of the swappable wings printed with some 3D Solutech "See-Through Black" filament I just got, for a toy-deco look. I wish this material was a bit more transparent, but it's still pretty cool!
These are both coming along nicely!!! I may buy the transformable ones before I even have Wheeljack!! Lol
I've finally had the time to get the transforming wings ready to share. STL download: Download 3D printer designs WFC:Earthrise Wheeljack Wings ăƒ» Cults I think most people will want to paint these to get a good color match on the toy's off-white color. A two-part version is available if you want to try to avoid painting or want to paint the parts separately. The two-piece wing is thicker than the one-piece. The overall shape of the top of the spoiler is the same as the stock wings, so an eventual Reprolabels set for this toy should fit after cutting the labels to match how these wings split. I've submitted these to Shapeways, I'm just waiting for them to approve the items. Last time that took about 36 hours (boo). Here are some pics. First of all, a spread of a bunch of wings. The stock wings, swappable wings in silver and smoke, one-piece transforming wings in silver and smoke, and two-piece transforming wings in white+silver and white+smoke. Transforming wings are now available to purchase from Shapeways. You can choose between the one-piece design, or the two-piece design which requires purchasing the inner and outer pieces separately. Man, I need the 3D files for these so I can shorten the width in alt mode to be more G1 like and then print them in my clear blue filament. Great work.
I see what you mean about the car wing being smaller on the G1 toy: I could get pretty close to that if I remove this section here: Want me to make a version like that?
Yes please, thats exactly what I was looking at doing. Also need a filler for the back of the arms so we don't have that gaudy gap under the wings.
This looks great! What do you think of making a spoiler for Cliffjumper? I made a mock up using a piece of cardboard if you think it would be a good start.
