Were the G1 coneheads Thrust, Dirge and Ramjet ever based off of certain real-life jets? I can't seem to find any reference material off of what they were based off of.
Idk. But , if I had to choose , I wld think Thrust was based off some early concept using VTOL engineering. ( Just my guess )
The planes themselves are just f-15s with modified wings no real world f-15 ever had a wing configuration like the coneheads. I think it was only done on the toys and cartoon to make them stand out more from starscream, thundercracker, and skywarp.
I think all besides Dirge have real-world wings configurations. Dirge's wings are completely made up but similar to canard wings.
The wings themselves are somewhat inspired by other real-life jets. But none of them ever appeared on an F-15 fuselage.
From what I understand they're a huge mix-up. The main body of course if from the F-15, but the rest... Thrust I think is completely made up. Maybe there was a plane with that shape wings, but definitely not with VTOL's in them. (I think if you put VTOL engines in the wings of a jet, the wings will take off leaving the jet on the ground -- all VTOL jets have the engine on or really close to the body.) Ramjet has wings that seem inspired by a prototype for an adaption of F16 (the F16 XL). The extra engines are made up. (G1 Needlenose transformed in such a jet.) Dirge seems loosely, very loosely inspired by several canard jets. The shape of the wings seems closest to the Dassault Rafale, but again with several adaptions.
There was an "If it ain't broke" series of experimental aircraft back in the late 70's through the early 80's that had variation on the the F-15 and F-16. There were all kinds of odd concepts tried on these two airframes. There was also the HiMAT series of experiments that had many features found on the "cone-head" seekers. (HiMAT: Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )
Dirge was also based on the Swedish Saab 37 Viggen jet, although it also has a bit of the Dassault Rafale.
I read something about Dirge being based off of a prototype jet that failed. As for Thrust, that would be a prototype VTOL. Ramjet is based off the prototype F16XL.
Failed prototypes... Or taken down by a freightliner truck, two minivans and a VW Beetle? The military is covering up the truth. All the military.
Wow, this HiMAT's features totally look like Dirge!! This is very similar to the iGear Masterpiece version of Dirge.
