The Optimus come in peace or shoot to kill thread got my sifting through various AOE youtube clips, and I came across the Autobot reunion clip.

It's a scene i generally quite enjoy, but I wonder was there any official explanation, or a common speculation as to why we got the random shot of Bee, Crosshairs, and Drift cruising together, when the following shots all suggest that those 3 Bots are all quite far apart. Indeed, Drift is up a mountain and then turns into a Helicopter, something which must have left the average movergoer wondering where that Bugatti went (they'll still be wondering in TLK! :lol )

Hound was either elsewhere when the call from Optimus came through or he was already there and holding down the fort, as it were. Meanwhile, Drift, Crosshairs, and Bumblebee were already together or regrouped en route.

They all got there and took up lookout positions around Monument Valley waiting to spot the arrival of Optimus.

It's a HUGE plot of land (I've actually been there), so obviously Optimus didn't just drive up to and within it inside the space of one minute, lol.

I think they just wanted specific shot of each character in the same general location and didn't care much about the logistics of how it all lined up.

    Nope.

Optimus was still well outside of Monument Valley when he made the call and we saw the three cars together.

Then the three of them were in separate locations within it by the time he arrived.

It's completely obvious that the scene is to be viewed as a compressed-time montage.

Just noticed a typo in the poll question, can we edit that ourselves now or do I still need a mod, it doesn't seem like it!

Except it isn't obvious, because no sound movie goer or movie maker would think to edit an introductory scene that awkwardly. With no temporal yardstick to go off of, and no clear transitions, nobody would know Drift was the Bugatti unless they knew going in from online promo stuff. And it is very awkward that the three cars would all split up mere moments before reuniting again in the movie. Not when this is the first time we're meeting these characters. The fact that only Drift transforms (into a helicopter no less, when triple-changing hasn't been prominently established) further hampers the flow of events, since it's not immediately clear just which of those briefly seen cars is who. Compare it to the first movie where each Autobot had a clear introduction scene, followed by the group all transforming in a slow, panning shot so we knew who was who.

True, none of this is technically wrong, but that doesn't make it any less confusing or odd. Why do this time-jumpy cutting when a simple, chronologically consistent introduction would be ten times more concise and effective? I remember being kinda surprised that Crosshairs' introductory shot is him running in the foreground, out of focus and partially out of frame, with the camera tracking Optimus and not him. Shouldn't he, as a new character, get a clear establishing introductory shot instead of just showing up on screen? Again, not wrong, just weird and could've been done much better.

Yeah, that's all pretty arbitrary decision-making.

The focus of the scene was the arrival of Optimus. So, yeah, Crosshairs ran in behind him.

(AFFFFTER his two second INTRODUCTION as a car, btw.)

And, as I already explained, the relative locations serve as "temporal yardsticks." Annnd triple+changing has already been introduced in previous films. Four films in they shouldn't really have to explain that it's a thing again and again.

Except for the obvious fact that it's a time-compressed montage, as established by the chronology of the shots vs. the relative locations of the characters, but w/e.

    >_>

I can accept it was a "time compressed montage" as you put it, and it had occurred to me, indeed it's one the poll options in a roundabout way. But I don't think it is obvious, I don't think it makes visual sense on screen, and i can believe that Bay wanted to put the car porn shot in, but struggled to fit it in seemlessly amongst the existing CG shots.

Yeah I'm still saying style over sense.
It's not a criticism. Movies often bend sense to fit in more style (like, almost every Hollywood action/car chase scene ever), and one of the big draws of Movieverse is seeing beautiful cars.
