Does not mean he will do it but anyone could be the mask! Even woman and kids so if jim carry passes they could still do it with someone else. But looks like WB wants to make a third mask film and wants jim carry to return. Not confirmed by wb so take it as a rumor for now WB Interested In Doing Another Mask Movie With Jim Carrey
Funny enough there was news earlier this year of there being a Mask reboot with a female lead so whatever this will happen or not,I like that Dark Horse seems to be interested into reviving one of their most iconic creations for a new era such as the new miniseries that came out this October.
Rather have a limited series of 8 or so episodes made closer to the comic version which was more violent. How Violent? Stanley didn't even live through the first mini series. He was dead In fact the hero of a lot of the mini series was the cop Kellaway who put on the Mask after Stanley was offed. Different people would get the mask after him and he'd hunt them down and try to get rid of it so it wouldn't fall into the wrong hands. (This was after he went on a spree of his own)
Wait what? Where can I watch this? I didn't even know that existed till you mentioned it just now. Also I would love to see another Mask movie with Jim Carrey but HOW though? Are they going to just completely disregard Son of the Mask ever even happened? Cause the Mask isn't even on Earth anymore, Loki took it back to Asguard. I think that's why they were considering a reboot is because a sequel isn't really possible to do anymore, Son of the Mask kinda killed it. Though to be fair it wouldn't be the first time Jim Carrey did a sequel to a movie that totally disregarded another movie made without him. Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003) - IMDb Dumb and Dumber (1994) - IMDb Dumb and Dumber To (2014) - IMDb According to the Prequel Harry was raised by his single biological mother. In the sequel they go to visit Harry's two adoptive parents and there's a joke about Harry not knowing he was adopted despite the fact that it should be obvious because of how genetics work. The scene of Harry visiting his parents doesn't have very much at all to do with the plot of the movie and I'm pretty sure was put in just to say hey the Prequel is no longer canon. So it wouldn't be too unheard of if they made another sequel to the first Mask that completely ignores Son of the Mask ever happened and maybe even intentionally contradicts that movie just so there's no question that it wouldn't be canon in the new sequel. There was a different Mask sequel planned YEARS ago called Revenge of the Mask that was planned but never got made... there was even a contest running at the time where a fan could win a walk on role in the movie. Considering all the promotional material for Revenge of the Mask including that contest it seemed like they had at least started production on it though rumors were that they had only sent Jim Carrey which at the time he turned down. It's very unclear what happened behind the scenes, all of this was just rumor and speculation. All I know for sure is that Revenge of the Mask never happened.
Sorry I meant a new mini comic series called I Pledge Allegiance to the Mask from Dark Horse. It's not a TV mini series though I wouldn't complain about that idea happening. We've recently have had Halloween get a movie that's a straight up sequel to the 1978 original ignoring all the other series so it's not impossible to consider the potential true Mask sequel doing the same thing.
...aaaand We Got This Covered strikes again. I honestly can't believe WB would be looking to do this just on the basis of Carrey not being even half the draw he was in the '90s. To me the only way making this would make any lick of sense now would be to fold both the sequel and the sheboot together into one movie and have it focus on Stanley's daughter/niece/etc., played by somebody who actually has marquee value in this day and age. I mean, hell, even Stranger Ghostbustings has Paul Rudd to speak of.
I didn't think it was THAT bad but I also wouldn't care if they just completely ignored it either. It was only barely passable and no where near as good as the first one. I could watch the original Mask over and over again but the sequel... I don't mind if it's on but it's not something I really want to watch. Um... he wasn't even that much a draw back then. He only got famous BECAUSE of the movies he did in the 90's. Before that he was kind of a nobody with a few movies here and there but nothing as popular as the Mask, Ace Ventura, or for some reason... Dumb and Dumber. While he's not as big of a draw as he use to be since he's not taking on as many projects anymore he's still actually just as popular now if not more than he was the first time he was in the Mask. The first time they really didn't know it was going to work doing a toned down version of a comic book character with a relatively unknown actor at the time. Now though Jim's entire fan base is because of that movie so to actually see him return to it would be a big draw. I didn't even know about the comic book until later and when I first heard about it I was like "What do you mean the comic was darker how is that even possible?" and then I did some research and holy crap! Yeah that is darker than the movie... but at least the movie didn't get Son of the Mask levels of toned down... Wait maybe that's why I didn't hate that movie as much as other people. I didn't see it as the violence being toned down TWICE, I only had the first movie and the animated series to compare it to. Anyway... they know the movie with Jim Carrey works now because they did it once before... they know there's a fan base for it because people like me still want to see that movie happen. I think the darker more like the comics reboot is more likely to happen though... especially after the success of Deadpool because now they know that a goofy rated R comic book movie is actually a big draw. The reason the first movie and Son of the Mask were toned down so much is because they thought the character would never work the way it was depicted in the comics and went for a more comedic tone. That said... I've seen some fan films that were closer to what the comics were and personally found them kind of boring. Maybe because the actors in fan films aren't always... well ACTING... Like the characters just seemed EXACTLY THE SAME with or without the Mask on and the effects weren't as cartoony... which isn't that the whole point of the Mask is to make people have the powers of a cartoon character but in the real world? Even in the comics that seemed to be the case except the big difference there is the toon force doesn't extend to other people and objects the Mask interacts with, it's only him or her, who's wearing the Mask at the time. Everyone and everything else still has to respond to real world laws of physics not toon physics. The muffler scene from the movie is played off as a joke there, those guys are fine because it's toon force but in the comic those guys are both dead because you can't shove a muffler up someone's butt without causing some internal bleeding and rupturing some organs. Anyway... I've still never read the comics so I'm not sure if the Mask plays better in there than in those fan films but the darker more comic book accurate Mask just seems boring to me because it limits how much we get to see the toon force happening. Son of the Mask made it too goofy with the whole dog vs. baby stuff and Loki so there were three characters running around with Mask powers and that's no longer a cartoon in the real world, that's just a cartoon. But the Jim Carrey version... that's the best version in my opinion. Why are you focused so much on getting someone with marquee value to be in the film? You do know that most regular people don't actually care about that right? Hollywood executives are pretty much the only people who care about that stuff and push that sort of thing but most of the general public just want someone who can play the part. That's all anyone should really care about is can they act not what their current celebrity status is. So many people are actually getting sick of movies only ever using popular celebrities to fill roles they're not right for. It's a pretty common complaint so I'm surprised to hear anyone actually asking for an actor to be cast based on popularity rather than talent. And don't get me wrong that's not really to say that popular celebrities AREN'T talented just that when you cast on popularity alone you often end up with celebrities in roles they aren't right for. Robin Williams, RIP, did a lot of movies like this where he was cast in movies just because he was popular but they ended up being terrible movies. Ever seen One Hour Photo? It was terrible, it might of been better with another actor in that role but not Robin Williams. Get someone who actually does horror movies to play that role not Robin Williams. (I don't normally watch horror movies and I didn't know this was one when I went to see it) No one goes to a Robin Williams movie to see a freaking pedophile stalking a family through their photographs... They go to a Robin Williams movie to have a good time and laugh at his incredible sense of humor. That's what makes him a huge draw and when you cast on popularity rather than talent you lose sight of why they're a draw in the first place. Hell even with Jim a big part of the reason his popularity dropped off is because he was being cast in roles he never should of been cast in. I love Jim Carrey and I'll watch damn near anything you put him in, even to this day... but there are just some movies that even having my favorite actor in them isn't enough to make me like the movie. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind probably would of worked better with Tom Cruise than Jim Carrey. It's not really a bad movie just boring and not really what I want from a Jim Carrey movie.
I'm not familiar with the Mask comic, but if it's violent, and they are trying to make a new Mask movie with darker violence, that would potentially turn off Jim Carrey. After he filmed Kickass 2, he then went on in an interview denouncing the film, saying that it was too violent.
Can't see them doing a R rated mask. That's like doing a R rated ninja turtles. Don't think it would go well with people who only know it from the movies. Yes we comic fans know the R mask but the rest of the world knows the family aimed movies and cartoons plus wb would want to sell mask toys and other things. People will be expecting a family comedy with cartoon gags and special effects not a bloody and gory scary movie. As for jim carry maybe he will just cameo? Again anyone can be the mask. Male or female. He could pass it off to a new mask in the film. That's why I said take it as a rumor but they did say something about a female mask movie some time back so this is not the first time hearing wb is looking at the mask.
Whether this is real or not, I'm not sure a sequel is needed. The origin material is too dark and violent, while Carrey's version was more lighthearted and played mainly for comedic effect. The public automatically thinks of Carrey's version when they hear "The Mask". Is it irreparable? Probably. If I were a shareholder, I'd be telling them "Carrey or nothing." It's most likely a good idea if they don't revisit this. Consider the original a one and done classic.
So is ninja turtles. Yup it was a two movie and a cartoon one and done 90s family fantasy. Just like Jumanji. That was a two movie (Jumanji and zarthura) and cartoon one and done 90s family fantasy series. Then Jumanji 3 was a box office smash! You don't think a new mask movie (a living cartoon in live action) could be a hit today? If done right it could be a big hit. Plus kids who grew up with the film are adults now and will take their kids to see the new version.
No, I don't. I don't think it has quite the legacy of the properties you mentioned. I can't imagine The Mask doing well in today's climate, and Carrey's train has come across as... "derailed" as of late. Watering it down or going the other way and darkening it to fit a narrative in today's society isn't the best way to go about it. But, that's my opinion. Not trying to state it as fact or to get an argument started.
To be fair people had the same opinion over the idea of Jumanji getting sequels but they ended up surprising people. It could be the same for The Mask or not but still it's not an impossible though for a sequel to be as good and beloved as the original even if it's years apart.
I'm one of those people. I personally couldn't stand the original Jumanji, but I completely enjoyed the sequel. I've yet to see the newest one, but I'd like to. And anything is possible, sure, but I wouldn't bet on it. The Mask is a good movie, it deserved more fanfare, and it deserved better than the sequel... Yikes. The trailer was even unwatchable. *shudder*
The rumored darker R rated version was going to be a reboot and wouldn't have Jim Carrey. If they do get him it would likely be the same tone as the first movie. Not the same thing at all. The Mask actually STARTED as being R rated in the comics, the Ninja Turtles did not. Their comics are darker but we've already gotten darker more comic book accurate versions of the turtles... twice... when they literally used the Comic Book Turtles in the 80's/2003 Crossover and again in the 80's/Nichelodeon crossover. Doing the Mask rated R would actually be like when Deadpool went from X-Men Origins Wolverine to actual Deadpool. Again... DEADPOOL! We literally just had this same exact thing happen with another similar character not too long ago and he's got a 3rd R rated movie still coming out UNDER DISNEY! If Deadpool can do that then the Mask shouldn't be a problem.
Don't you mean better? The second one wasn't really that great. Anyone who says a r-rated wouldn't work clearly isn't aware of the source material. The Mask... actually called "Big Head" in the comics... not sure why his head isn't even that big "Green Head" would be more descriptive. Anyway... he is silly and like a cartoon character just like in the movie. The R rating really comes due to the fact that cartoon physics don't extend to the world around him. In the movie both the Mask and basically everyone and everything he interacts with essentially becomes a cartoon so no one ever really gets killed and there's just funny sight gags. But in the comic the cartoon physics only applies to the person who's actually wearing the Mask. Everyone else... well they die the way any real person would. Heck Tina and whatever that lady's name is who got pregnant in the second one should both be dead because of what the Mask did with them in each of those movies. The second one... maybe not dead but at least have a broken hip due to the rough super speed sex. (How is that scene in a kids movie BTW? I mean they don't show anything other than shadows but it's still super obvious even to a kid what's happening there. I wonder how many kids learned where babies come from from watching that movie.)
