I wasn't expecting so much partsforming. Yikes. I think I'll keep the SOC and that'll make it easier to justify not getting their Lion Voltron either.

I’ve had them both, still have the Classic set from the first time it was released. Definitely not a retool. “Shared engineering” is a stickier question. No parts are shared between the two that I noticed, it’s just that black lion, structurally speaking, always works the same way. Even in Legendary Defender the front legs, back legs, wings, and chest end up in the same place for combination.

Good to know. I might see about getting the classic version, though I don't know if I really need a Voltron that is that big

Which Voltron would you get? I’m debating with myself about getting the Playmates 40th anniversary Voltron, so I’m in a similar boat.

If you’re on a budget and want a really good figure, the Metal Bear Blitzway KO is the one to get.
If you’re looking for a collectible hoping to sell for a profit later, then the Playmates one maybe.

Watch a video showing the sound gimmick. That's a really big selling point on the Playmates. If you're not into that, it's probably better to pass on it. I personally absolutely love the sound gimmick on the Playmates, but it's also not my primary Voltron.

Hey guys got a few questions. Which legendary defender voltron is better the 16 inch one or the diecast one?

And for the 40th re release in target did anyone see them pop in in nj or ny?

Are these real reissues or did the warehouse dragon hoarding them die?

I think it depends on what you want out of a Voltron. The diecast one is only about 8 inches tall, but it’s fairly solid. It’s not perfect, but it’s fun if you want a nice sharp LD Voltron that will easily fit on the shelf. The 16” one is gonna be a pretty great toy, but less of a collector-oriented item. I don’t own that one myself, but I assume it’s similar to the 16” Classic version. It probably won’t be as stable as the diecast version, but it’s impressively huge and fun to play with.

I think they’re real reissues. The 40th Anniversary branding on the packages seems to indicate they are new…or at least the packaging is, lol…

Never handled the diecast one but watched some reviews back in the day and every one I watched was pretty underwhelming. And the combined form is pretty small.

I don’t have the full Playmates LD anymore, my son lost interest and had me sell it a con, but it’s very comparable to the classic 84 one that’s being rereleased now. Has similar sound gimmicks, quality, articulation etc.. which is pretty good but definitely a pretty good kid’s toy. Its a little harder to balance in combined mode that the ‘84 one though.

I really like the diecast one. The 16 inch one is nice too but it is so big and at least on mine hard to keep standing.

Wish they had done a die cast classic Voltron before the line died.

If you want a small scale classic Voltron, there's always the Lucky Cat one, granted it might be a bit harder to find now since it's been out for a few years

For LD Voltrons, I have both versions. The large one is very similar to the 84 Playmates version with lights and sound gimmicks. It's a solid toy.
The die cast version is a nice box set, and has a bit more articulation in the black lion (he can do a sitting pose well). The die cast wings do not rotate like the 16" version. Also, no weapons for the individual lions in the die cast version.
I prefer the larger set because it has the pilot sleds, individual lion weapons, and the wings articulate all over the place. You can even remove them completely and pretend they are the shield.

There are two LD Voltrons in the works from Blitzway and another company. So, depending on your timeframe and budget - those may be an option.
Here's a few photos of the 2 current LD Voltron toys.

Real, they were announced a few months ago but no one knew which retailer(s) would be carrying them at the time.
