Wait a minute, who's Bryan Cranston again? *types name into youtube* OH MY GOD, IT'S HAL FROM MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE! My favorite fictional Hal ever right after the deviously pragmatic computer from Space Odyssey 2001. Interesting choice. I tried reading old Cyke's lines with his voice. First it was a bit strange, but after a few pages it worked like a dream! Still, I guess my first choice for Cranston to voice would've been Red Alert, Seeing that both Hal and Red are kind of nervous wrecks :D

For some reason I hear Daffy Duck when I read Whirl. Probably since Daffy's such a jerk in The Looney Tunes Show.

Glad I'm not the only one with a huge list. Funnily enough, I had a lot of 'not' voices in my head when I first read these--that is, not placing a preprogrammed voice in those characters mouths...but now that I've found this thread I've gotta chime in. *deep breath* Here goes....
Swerve - Rob Paulsen (not Yakko, similar to his normal speaking range.)
    Skids - Nathan Fillion
Rung- James Urbaniak (Dr. Venture without the ego/arrogance)
    Rewind- Bumper Robinson
Chromedome- David Kaye (again, similar to normal speaking voice, i.e. TFA Optimus)
    Ratchet-Jeffrey Combs
Whirl- John DiMaggio (somewhere between Bender and Dr. Drakken from Kim Possible)
    Rodimus- Will Friedle
    Cyclonus- Steve Blum
Ultra Magnus- Jeff Bennett (has great comedic chops for dry humor)
    Drift- Josh Keaton
    Spinister- Bill Faggerbakke
Crankcase- Corey Burton (a la TFA Ratchet)
    Misfire- Tom Kenny
    Tarn- Ron Perlman
    Impactor- Adam Baldwin
    First Aid- Brent Spiner

Still having a tough time on Tailgate, Brainstorm, and Trailbreaker...lots of good possibilities there. Now, the question is, which voices will I actually hear when I go back and reread these for the tenth or so time?

    David Kaye as Overlord
    Thomas F. Wilson as Whirl
    Stephen Furst as Tailgate
    Fred Tatasciore as Megatron
    Jeffery Combs as Ratchet
All other characters who appeared in G1 cartoon retain their voices

Originally I read Tarn in Tom Hardy's voice, but now I think Keith David's more fitting.

I hear Tarn's voice as Hugo Weaving's Megatron, but minus all the snarling and growling and shouting.

I cannot for the life of me hear Jeffery Combs as this Ratchet (since a lot of people seem to), though. I dunno why, but he doesn't sound... old enough, I guess? I mean, this Ratchet feels like he needs an aged, "has seen some shit" type of vibe that Combs' Ratchet voice just doesn't seem to capture. I think Brian Dobson's Red Alert from Armada kinda has that going on, but a bit older-sounding still.

Oh, and ever seeing that little Firefly homage comic Josh drew with Rodimus and Whirl, Adam Baldwin is now Whirl in my head, now and forever.

It's impossible for me to read this Ratchet in Combs' voice. It just does not work.

    Burton or bust.

Burton was the first VA that popped into my head. I'm kinda going back and forth; I think he can work, but maybe if he toned down his Animated Ratchet voice a bit so that it doesn't sound as exaggerated as it did in Animated (don't get me wrong; it worked awesomely there).

What can I say? I guess I just have strange casting preferences. :lol  Seriously though, between him and Tatasciore, voices tend to fluctuate in my head; although I think Combs in batshit insane-mode works in certain spots. I can't picture him with Burton's voice though--never caught on for me.

    Thanks, it totally does!

Corey Burton's Ratchet is Ratchet for me.

Don Messicks: Whoop-de-doo, it's Scooby Doo. I like Scooby better when Frank Welker voices him.

Robert Foxworth: Say what you will, I think he has the second best Rstchet.

Jeffery Combs: Don't get me wrong, he's a great actor, but his Ratchet just doesn't do it for me.
