I have a NeoGAF link, but I don't think I can post it here. Feel free to search it up for those interested. (NSFW though)

Caved in and bought a bluetooth controller to play games on my Samsung Gear VR. They seem to be adding alot more titles now to the Oculus Gear VR store and the best ones require a controller or are just best played with a controller. Looking at getting Dreadhalls, Minecraft, and maybe one of the space shooters.

Wayyyyyyyy to expensive at this point in time. Plus I can imagine that since you can see what time it is you wouldn't notice that you've just played 8 hours of the game when you thought you played for 2.

What is it like watching a movie on one of these VR headsets? Has anyone tried? If so, how big is the viewing screen?

I can only speak for the Samsung Gear VR, but it all depends on the app. They're all good though, never felt like the video was too small. I've never watched an entire movie with the headset.

Some apps have you watching in a theatre, in a living room, on the moon, as a small ant watching a video from the phone, etc. You can't adjust the size of the video with those apps and they also project light onto surfaces, so you're not just watching a floating video.

Other apps like Samsung VR (Samsung Milk VR), lets you scale the video without the environment. You can scale it big enough to where you'd have to turn your head just a little bit. There are a ton of free videos on this app, but this app is preferred if you happen to have 3D movies stored on your phone/memory card.

Gear VR Gallery, lets you look at all your photos and videos. You can also position videos any way you like it. Samsung VR lets you do the same, but you're limited horizontally. Gear VR Gallery just does a better job with it. So you can lay/sit down in any position you find comfortable.

    Very cool but very flawed.

It's like having a personal IMAX theater, but at the same time you get at least a little bit of the screendoor effect, and lower apparent resolution if you try to fit the whole frame in your vision.

i can set a timer on my pc, ps3, and xbox, to turn off automatically, even if i am playing a game.

i am sure the same can be done for this.

That would be a very bad idea if your playing multiplayer or a game that requires you to manually save the game.

it'd be better than dying in real life, because you didn't set a timer.

but if that doesn't work for you, i am sure you can set a clock. i mean, most MMO's have clocks. some will even tell you how long you've been playing for, every hour.

some won't even let you continue playing until after you've taken a break. i am sure most VR headsets will be doing something similar, to avoid lawsuits.

If the headset MAKES you take a break that would really suck if it's like every hour or 2 but if it's reasonable like every 5 hours that's understandable.

I can't wear my headset for more than 30 minutes without having to wipe my face. Hard edges from the velcro cushion strips are annoying. So I don't know how any can even have their headset on for 5 hours straight.

VR was a fad that died relatively quick back in the 90s. I don't foresee its sophomore attempt doing much better. I give it a year or two, tops.

Also some of them are heavy they put pressure on your nose bridge, or at least the ones I've tried.

not really. you really should be taking a break every hour or so from video games anyways. staring at a screen that long can cause permanent eye problems. and that is without the headset. with a headset, who knows what it will cause. especially if you will be having games at 4k.

you should also not play on a empty stomach. learned that from Metal Gear Solid in the 90s.

    It also causes headaches.

Nowadays I only spend an hour gaming after every long break I get.

hm. that explains a lot for me. as a kid and teenager, i spent a LOT of my time sitting three feet away from the 32 inch tv playing video games. monday to friday, 4 hours a day after school. 12 hours on saturday and sunday. i'm near-sighted as a result.

nowadays i play 2 to 3 hours a day with 30 minutes breaks.

but if you really want to mess up your eyes, get a Nintendo Virtual Boy. you're welcome. :)

you know, it doesn't even need to be a long break. just getting up every once in awhile to pee, or grab a soda, or something, should be fine. grab a bag of chips. every hour or so, just get up, and stretch your legs.

yea, i remember using the virtual boy once. it was a terrible experience.

i don't play a game for more than an hour without a break these days. things like higher resolution, and higher frame rates, and what not, kind of creep me out. considering i know that the frame rate on a tv, is just slightly lower than the speed it'd need to be to hypnotize people. but, now you are adding 4000 pixels per inch, or whatever it is, and upping the frame rate to 60 frames per second. just makes me wonder if i am being hypnotized.
