Don't worry about it was better than the real ending. That one was more interesting. I think many of us wish that was the ending. Instead we got this.
Fox's Adult The Flintstones Sequel, Bedrock, Casts Fred, Wilma and Others (msn.com) I always say that when I scrutinize something I always look at the principle behind it and the precedent it sets. THIS is what Velma is getting us, and I fear it's only the tip of the iceberg...
At least Mindy’s not involved. But yeah, I don’t foresee Bedrock doing well, as Velma has pretty much killed the world’s interest in seeing “adult”, modernized retellings of these classic characters. I’d be surprised if Velma season 2 even does well, considering that everyone’s seen everything this show has to offer. But we’ll see.
I doubt that the sort who made the first season do well by hate watching are bright enough to stop it after just one season. Unfortunately, they will likely make season 2 successful and probably Bedrock as well. And then they'll whine about them being successful, because their potato battery brains aren't capable of the pattern recognition required to realize that they're the ones at fault for that success in the first place.
I think they are exaggerating about Velma’s success. Studios tend to fudge the numbers these days. We were told the CW was successful and doing great for years and the shows were breakout successes when most were just doing average to subpar numbers. Then we were told that the network hadn’t really made a profit in a decade. And it sold for almost nothing. It’s been proven now many reviews are just puff pieces paid for by networks or stars trying to prop themselves up, and many later prove to be outright lies later. Most recently you saw people talking about how great rings of power was when it premiered and a month after they aired all the episodes the same reviewers saying how awful the show was. So I tend to take anything many of these publications say with a grain of salt. You never know which are real articles and which are just paid fluff.
But The Flintstones was always sort-of adult. It aired during prime time back in its day, and mostly concerned itself with adult sitcom-y affairs like job security and keeping secrets from spouses, itself heavily inspired by The Honeymooners. It then further went on to inspire The Simpsons. A more mature take on the subject matter isn't even breaking new ground, per se, as there was that comic book series a few years ago that was quite the critical darling (but didn't garner huge sales), that delved into subject matter like Fred and Barney discussing the ethics of genocide.
If the reboot is more the Mark Russell comics (which I will defend to my dying day and beyond) and less the the stuff Velma had, I'd have a lot to look forward to.
I remember Seth Macfarlane wanted to do an adult Flintstones but decided not to since it felt too much like family guy. Elizabeth Banks got lucky with Cocaine Bear this Flintstones will probably be more like her Charlie's Angels. Seth MacFarlane's Flintstones Reboot Is Dead Because It Would Have Basically Just Been Family Guy
You also need to understand back then cigarettes and child safety weren’t really a thing, back then you could buy them out of vending machines. They weren’t behind counters and many kids would just go buy them from stores when their parents weren’t paying attention. Which is why when you watch old movies with tough kids you sometimes see them smoking Hell for awhile the tobacco companies marketed them as healthy and made advertising that skewed towards kids. Wasn’t till the late 70 early 80s that parent groups caught on and started doing something about it. Before that people didn’t know about the side effects and tobacco companies even hid it. Hell one of our former presidents used to be a cigarette model Yeah you’d be surprised how they used to be marketed and how easy they were for kids to get. Couple of kids I knew in the 80s got cigarettes out of those old vending machines some places hadn’t gotten rid of yet one even got hooked.
This show is the gift that keeps on giving. So many fun reviews got made that are a helluva lot more entertaining and funny than the show! The latest being Cynical Reviews, who has not done much in a while, now back with a 2 hour long review!
An interview with co-creator, Charlie Grandy, addressing the abysmal reception. It’s hilarious in how he doesn’t seem to understand why people hate this show. Just that they made it with the best of intentions, which I find hard to believe. Velma Creator Comments on Negative Reviews Best part might be this little snippet: They failed miserably on both fronts.
