Oh man! Episode 5 was really good. Lots of laughs and a lot of story pushes. Spoiler loved the fake Casey Kasem cameo! Probably the second best so far after episode 4 being the best.
Um, there's a fake Casey Kasem cameo? I haven't seen the episode yet but that seems like it could be a little sketchy. Especially if it's someone claiming to be Casey and not just someone who looks or sounds like him. Don't think Casey would approve much of this show.
Casey Kasem was actually well-known for wanting there to be a positive representation of middle easterners whenever there was a negative one. So, honestly, I can't see him being on board with this show just with the little bit I've seen of it. Of course... everyone's a peace of shit and not just the characters of middle eastern descent so maybe that would balance everything out for him?
What negative representation of Middle Easterners are you seeing on the show? What representation of Middle Easterners at all beyond a background student in a hijab?
As I said, everyone on this show pretty much acts like a piece of garbage human being. There's nothing positive about any of the characters. Sure, maybe it's not anything that is specifically due with middle eastern culture, but there are middle eastern characters who are being portrayed as generally shitty people. Again, maybe since everyone being a garbage person seems to be the show's schtick that wouldn't bother him, but please... continue with your gotcha guy routine. That seems to be your schtick after all.
So, yeah, that was someone stating that they were Casey Kasem. Don't know where to begin on that one. They seem to hate the original so much but they decide to impersonate the guy beyond the grave? Did they even get permission from his loved ones? Will say that outside of that, episodes 5 and 6 were pretty unremarkable. Not distractingly unfunny as 1-4, but also nothing reaching good or funny. Their attempts at humor all fell flat with the exception of my one laugh with that goalpost collapsing. Fred pining after Velma even though she's still only slowly sliding into the "inner beauty" bracket is just dumb and really shows how Mindy sees herself. Fred is very sexualized in this, giving so many of his scenes that creepy edge that makes me wish my DVDs would come in the mail already so I can forget about it. Not that it's anywhere as bad as episode 4 in the "creeping on teens" department. Norville continues to get more unlikeable as time goes on. Now he has a replacement for Velma to be shitty to him while he kisses their feet. He looked like he would get a character arc to break free from that but they dropped it by the end of episode 5. Am I crazy or does this new girl have a similar color scheme to Scooby? And the brain implant mad science project is called "Scoobi." And the villain is cutting out brains. Non-zero chance Norville's girlfriend is getting her brain implanted into a dog. Oh no. Kind of disappointing to see Captain Cutler be nothing more than a cameo here. This show feels so un-Scooby and I do think the lack of monsters has something to do with it. It'd probably just mean one more superficial Scooby-Doo element but damn it at least there'd be fun in a costumed bad guy. He seemed pretty picky with Shaggy and therefore possibly the property, seeing as he dumped the role when they were going to make a Burger King commercial with Shaggy. This is why he didn't return to the franchise until 2002 after they agreed to allow Shaggy to stop eating meat. Also note that he lended his voice mainly to children's shows and had a long history with Shaggy. Do you think this show that makes digs at just about everyone and is spiteful toward the franchise would really appeal to him? I have heavy doubts. Just wanted to add because Casey goes beyond the Carbombya situation and wanting positive representation of Middle Eastern people. (Also another thing I accidentally added Deathcatg into the multiquote so sorry about that.)
Daphne's mothers although severely incompetent police officers have been depicted as a loving, committed couple who care deeply for their daughter and whose sexuality isn't really being fetishized like the Daphne/Velma relationship. Daphne also never pulls any you're not my real moms shit even after meeting her biological parents. It's a pretty positive representation of an interracial couple, a lesbian couple, and of adoptive parents and children.
So we’re at that point where YouTube reviews are worthless. Everyone has made up their minds on the show, and they’re not about to stop giving their audiences what they want. We’re not going to see any shocking “the show had a good episode!!” videos. I’m still going to give this show a fair chance & see if it does get any better. But I don’t think I’ll bother watching any more YouTube reviews. Gotta wait until tonight to catch the new ones. Almost there now!
Didn't the teaser for the new episode suggest Velma trying to break up Norville with his new girlfriend so he can dump for her again?
If you liked episodes any of the previous episides, you'll probably be impressed with 5 and 6 since they are much better than any of the ones before. The jump from the worst (4) to 5 was really noticeable. I was still unimpressed with them and have criticisms they reached a level that I wasn't constantly feeling critical, outside of that creepy shit with Fred.
So that's how you define positive? You might as well say that these are all virtuous people because they murdered each other.
You could say that but it would be dumb and reductive. Also inaccurate because only 1 person is murdering anyone as far as we know. Are you trying to suggest that to be positive representation the characters need to lack all flaws? You asked for an example of positive representation. Identity isn't monolithic. They may be a poor representation of small town police but in what way is being a loving, committed married couple and supportive parents not a positive representation?
