Wait, so they're going to have to cast new people as Kirk and Spock? That's going to be touigh.

On the off chance that this is actually true, fingers crossed that the concept will get shelved in favor of something interesting like it did the last time.

I'd agree, but only if the definition of rocks was changed to utterly contrived pish.

So if the last one sucked, does that mean that the uneven and even rule has been switched? Hope so, want to see a good ST movie again.

And I have a failing that the young Spock and Kirk will cause more controversy then the new Bond actor.

Given the advances in cgi, maybe they can create believable enough digital actors, and just have Shatner and Nimoy dub the voices.

It would be better than sitting through two hours of "good enough for Hollywood" Kirk and Spock impressions.

Thhbbtt. While Nemesis was meh, I was hoping this was another TNG movie as I'm not ready for them to hang it up quite yet. This could be good, but I have serious doubts.

Okay, having been a devoted "behind-the-scenes" Trek fanatic for years, the first thing that comes to mind is "Finally." This Kirk & Spock at the Academy idea has been something they've been bouncing around since Star Trek 6, where they wanted to use the 6th and final movie as a "reflective" piece on the lives of the original Enterprise crew and show how they had grown to be such a close-knit family over the years. (Er, at least, that's what I remember it being described as in The Art of Star Trek, Star Trek: Phase 2 and Star Trek Creator...which I all read cover to cover, back when I didn't know about alcohol and sex.)

If this is anything close to the Harve Bennett script, which a lot of Trek in-house folks have lauded as amazing and very faithful to the Kirk & Spock characters, (see the above books,) then I think we'll be in for a real treat. How they'll pull off these characters as young men...I dunno. Shatner was in his 30s when they did the original Star Trek, so not much would have changed, facially, between Academy and Kirk's first stint on the Enterprise.

    We'll see. I'll remain optimistic. Anything's better than...Enterprise. Ugh.

Being in the UK, you may not have heard of Variety, but it is a fairly well regarded Hollywood trade paper and is hardly a source to publish rumors without openly stating it. They would do nothing but damage their own credibility within an industry they depend upon for their survival.

I think the concept sounds boring as hell. It could be good, I guess, but I don't like the sound of it.

In this script, do they ever like, oh I dunno, go into space? Seems like Kirk and Spock bumbling around the Academy, Spock yammering about the illogic of Kirk nailing every female cadet that walks within 10 feet would not a good movie make.
While it might sidestep/ignore poor Pike, a money shot of the original round-engined, non-lettered, but modern CGI Enterprise might be worth the price of a ticket alone. Will there be young versions of any of the rest of the original crew or just Kirk and Spock?

I know what Variety is, I just don't put stock in anything until stuff actually starts happening.

This sounds.... odd. Does this mean that Kirk and Spock worked together, before Kirk took command of the Enterprise, or are they just going to ignore Captain Pike? Wouldn't be the first time the movies have ignored canon set by TOS.

I liked the other idea for ST 11 that was floating around. It was supposed to center around a guy named Tiberius Chase, his crew, and the events that lead to the formation of the Federation. I think they were going to have something about the Romulan war in there, too.

Well, the original version of the Bennett script - or, at least part of it - got turned into a novel about the crew of the Excelsior, where it's Sulu that has to go around and round up all of the retired crew of the old Enterprise (instead of Kirk.) If I remember correctly, the original Bennett script was going to be half "Remember when..." and half "Where are they now?" so, like, I GUESS there would be some space travel involved...but it was really more character-intensive.

...which probably wouldn't be very good Trek to most folks. However, I liked the idea.

Well, I didn't mean it should be the Enterprise flying around blowing shit up, but more like a shot at the end where the original crew comes aboard for the first time (hence, how to deal with Pike?)...also a good way to set up a sequel.
Seems to me a Star Trek movie without not only the Enterprise, but any space travel whatsoever (a training or 'first assignment' scenario) ain't gonna fly (der-her).

My guess is they dusted off the Bennett ST VI Script and are reworking it, using that as a starting point. I personally have really wanted to see it come to life in some way ever since I read it way back in the day at a Con.

I think it might have been a cool idea for a TV show episode, but I’m hesitant about it being a movie too.

I’m wondering if they are taking it back to pre-original are they going to build the sets to mach.

It would be lame if things looked like

Yeah, looking like disabled hotlinks would be pretty lame.
