This is extremely disturbing on so many levels.
I find it extremely odd that no one had a problem with the name until now...
Something smells fishy.
At the risk of being banned, I will keep silent of whats on my mind.
i don't understand.
how is this disturbing?
i would have figured that the name would have been changed a long time ago.
It's just a handegg team... meh.
Real football's still on.
I think they overstepped their boundaries by doing that, but I don't object to the results. The name needs to change. If the team were named after any other slur, it would've been renamed already since the offended race would have a greater voice via population.
Pigskin or checkerball?
how about calling the team Redwolves?
...ok, maybe not rednecks but the first two sound good.
I didn't know the term 'Redskin' was considered racist... I assume it actually is?
If the general populace had that big of a problem with a privately owned, sports team's mascot then they would vote with their dollar. The financial crush would force the Redskins to change their name to stay financially viable.
I think they should have just changed the logo to a red skinned devil character. To me this is WAAAY over stepping legal boundaries.
Redheads? Red-headed stepchildren?
Sounds to me like you can't legally trademark an offensive term, so scrubbing a trademark is more just fixing a legal error than making some grand "progressive" statement or anything. And evidently the team can still call themselves "Redskins," they just won't have any legal backing, so....
The reality is that politicians look for easy ways to portray themselves as "heroic." So it doesn't really matter if it's offensive or not.
For better or worse, they should have foreseen this eventuality and changed the name on their own.
This will have ZERO effect on the Redskins. They can appeal, and during the appeal ( which can take up to 10-15 years) the Skins will still be Federally protected against misuse of logo or names. Also because the trademark was removed, you could technically now go sell redskins bootlegs shirts, jerseys etc, and the Govt CAN'T prosecute your for trademark infringement. However the Skins can still sue people who use thier likeness and name under Common law and common usage law without prior approval.
BTW- The Group that "Forced" the removal was 5 people total.... 5 people determine what is good for the whole of us.
Long and short of the Story... NOTHING IS HAPPENING FOR AT LEAST 5-7 YEARS!
Call them the Drunken Irish. I'm Irish and not offended at all so were good.
Or the Whiteskins. Again, not offended.
This is a very slippery slope. Who determines what is "offensive"?
I'm really, really tired of this story.
Look out Atlanta Braves, you're next!
Maybe the trademark will be reinstated (as part of some larger agreement) under the stipulation that it be held by the team but retired.
That way people won't be able to use it.
Really, they should capitalize on this. This is an incompetent govt. we're talking about. Just tell them you can't afford to make such wholesale changes to the "brand" and you'll have a new stadium in no time.
Separate names with a comma.
