Yeah, well, once again everyone uses a ridiculously inconsistent '80s cartoon as the "bible" when it comes to these things. I'm with you on this. I realize this is fiction, but it could at least pretend to respect basic rules of physics.

It isn't G1 that did it more than IDW and Dreamwave did.

IDW had at one point and inscale combiner with Menasor (which showed they don't need to be oversized to be a threat like some people think), and at least attempted to explain how combiners could get so big that it was physically impossible without the use of basically magic.

G1 or Dreamwave on the other hand...

(Although tbf, nothing should have Pat Lee's TF art as a basis).

I 100% agree with you. I want a Predaking but he would be as a big as my trypticon. And that's wierd.

Yeah I see what you mean. Generally when it comes to toys I care much less about scale and I freely mix deluxes, voyagers, leaders etc. but sometimes it does get ridiculous. These are the cases which put me off buying something.

    Examples:
    - "City" bots just don't fit in anywhere and don't scale with anything. Base modes like Overlord or Scorponok are ok though, they don't claim to be an entire city block.
    - I just can't accept that Defensor has a motorcycle for a leg.
    - TR Astrotrain transforms not just into a locomotive, but an entire train. If the windows were scaled properly to the titanmaster, his train mode would have to be like 5 feet long.
    - Broadside being both a jet and an aircraft carrier
    - TR Alpha Trion being a lion and a spaceship

This is where I appreciate new interpretations like in Classics and Generations. Sandstorm being a dune buggy that turns into a transport helicopter was always silly but the T30 version fixes that with much more sensible alt modes.

On the media side I do like that Cyberverse actually seems to care about scale, with Astrotrain being huge. A titan class Cyberverse Astrotrain made in CHUG style could be cool.

Mass shifting was a staple of the TF series. Wait, call it Mass displacement.:D :p

What if it’s actually volume shifting? Maybe the mass remains the same and the density changes?

Hmm, that would explain the fact that when I transformer was its natural height it could be damaged easily but then you can say when it became a devastator with the constructicons, they became a hard to damage. The mass would weaken when the density was spread but combined the density increases, but the mass is the same.

Total amount of atoms stay the same but the distance between them changes. That would certainly be better than mass shifting. That would also mean that Megatron in gun mode would weigh as much as his robot mode.

and over an Elephant it seems!

If mass remains the same but volume increases, then density drops. Decreasing volume with constant mass increases density. Therefore the “tougher” state would be the smaller form. If the individual Constructicons increased in size to become Devastator but did not add mass, then the big guy would actually be less dense than the individual bots.

True, but it did help that the standard Go-Bot figure was about Legends class size. It's a lot easier to make a properly interactive base when the inhabitants are that small. Of course, Hasbro didn't even make the Titans highly interactive for Legends, apart from ramps and the occasional gun to man. I'd love to see a basebot where the base is given priority.

You sure about that? Devastator in particular was sometimes depicted as absolutely colossal.

Given the real world size of some of his components' altmodes, you could justify it, but neither the toy nor the depiction of the Constructicons merit the combined form being THAT huge.

    G1 was inconsistent with everything.

He also at one point had a wingspan smaller than a battleship and his components were human sized.
