But on the bright side I decided to go with UT Challenger due to the how people feel about the figure and the articulation.

I am a little confused though. I kind of want to get the Battle Damaged version of him, but as much as I like the new head, the "dirt" on the mask is a little too much for me. How can you tell from the current runs and the 2nd run of Challenger for the new head? If it's possible, I'm hoping to get him without resorting to get dragoon for the new head since I already have Sky Breaker the 4th party Dragoon to pair with him and Nero sometime later.

Yep so I bit the bullet and got the Damaged Version of Challenger. I didn't snag him from TFSource with that price so I went a bit cheaper and got him from a seller from China on Ebay. Boy howdy hope it doesn't take 2 months to get to the states.

 

Tfsource has the worst prices and slow shipping, from my experience. Hope yours arrives quickly! It’s a really great figure but if you’re getting the battle damaged one I’d suggest reading up on how to do an ink wash.

 

I don't mind most of the battle damage on the figure from the screenshots posted online, but I'll be noted for instructions while it gets shipped.

The only part of Challenger with the weathering I REALLY don't like is the head, mostly the faceplate. The little spots look...wrong if you catch my drift. So if I just wanted to get rid of some spots on his head what would be a good tool for small areas?

 

I'd say you're better off just repainting the face. It's shiny silver, which you can get a spray for or use a small brush. But panel lining or ink washing is going to help tremendously to bring out the detail. The brighter silver on the damaged one really washes out some of the detail, IMO.

 

I just use the included Prime head from Dragoon. It doesn’t look too out of place and I much prefer the cleaner look.

 

I'm no real stranger to paint jobs, but it was a while since I painted the Voyager class TF5 Optimus. I think I may have the right silver for Challenger, but think you can send me a link to the best looking shiny silver colors/matches?
Don't suppose you have a quick guide on doing ink washes and paint on colored plastics as well? Other than that, I think I can nail this once I get the time to do it when he arrives.

That was my other idea, but Ebay wasn't giving me the best results and I wasn't keen on buying Dragoon just to get the new head since I already have a 4th party Dragoon to go with Challenger in my collection.

 

I don't have the battle damaged one so I can't say for sure but any shiny silver spray paint should do the trick. I don't have a guide for ink washing but maybe I should make one... It's easy though, since it doesn't dry for a little while and even then it's easy to rub off unless you spray it with a clear coat.
