If all you want to do is read, Kindle Paperwhite is the way to go. I was close to getting one but putting it off, and now that I am going to get an iPad Mini as a gift I no longer have to.

Kindle Fire is decent, if you're deadset on a Kindle or Nook.

If you're a power Amazon user, you should consider Prime - at $79 I think it's a freaking bargain, but that's because I do the bulk of my non-essential shopping on Amazon - and if you get it, the Kindle is a no-brainer.

For the cost, customer service (I've had two fail, one completely my fault, both replaced easily and conveniently by Amazon), selection in the Kindle store, access to the Prime lending library, and ability to share what you've read with multiple Kindles or other devices, I think Kindle is an unbelievable bargain. I love mine.

That being said, I read a lot, travel to austere locations frequently (the battery life is a bonus), and share an Amazon account with another Kindle owner. I am also very hard on electronics, so tend to get the most basic items accepting I'll be replacing them. That all make the Kindle particularly appealing to me.

My major disappointment with Kindle has been the PDF functionality. Jealous of iPad users who can navigate PDFs with enviable ease. I use PDFs dozens of times throughout the day, and would use a tablet-like device at work solely for them, but it's not enough of a bonus for me to jump up from my basic Kindle.
