Based on this design, I wonder if she was planned for Core originally or not. Looks a bit simpler, as it were, than what we got.

A game of semantics... I tend to associate concept art with "ideas that were changed or dropped." For example, whatever the hell's going on here:
    The-Last-Knight-Concept-Art-18-Grimlock-Driller.jpg
Or more relavantly, with early Rattrap here:
    Concept-Rattrap.jpg

The stuff in this thread is just regular character models. Like, I guess that counts too, but it doesn't exactly scream concept to me. (Obviously it doesn't help that these are all familiar faces, that all the conceptualizing was done decades ago by Mainframe and Kenner)

I like the bot mode concepts. I wonder if the cartoon will be using the toy models or something closer to these concepts.

I Hope there not going to do to Beast Wars what they did to Unicron just a one off thing then gone.

Cheetor, the biggest POS of the Kingdom line. Who hasnt broken the tab inside the neck ? Once the tabs broke, its ok but you gotta be careful. The cat neck cracks from the pressure the cat head gives while locking in place.

Am I wrong in thinking that the pipeline for Transformers oughtta be, "engineer makes good toy/transformation FIRST," THEN they can decide who that figure should represent and decide on a character and do the head sculpt/color scheme SECOND? You can google a photo of rattrap from Beast Wars, or an actual rat. Commissioning someone to do "designs" of these seems like paying someone a whole lot to do some tracing.

If they can't figure out the transformation to a satisfactory degree, you end up with a figure who looks nothing like the drawings, and the disappointment that results in this thread. "Make it look like this, and I have no idea how" seems like a frustrating task to put on a designer.

Seems this ended up being reused for RED Cheetor once Kingdom Cheetor's details were changed to be more show-accurate.

But that's not the point of concept art. You can't figure out the engineering if you don't know what the two modes are supposed to look like, or how the details are going to factor in.

Concept art isn't always exploratory (wild crazy new ideas). Sometimes you're just providing a reference so a toy designer doesn't have to be staring at 8 different images to know what Cheetor's flank looks like, because Mainframe CG models are rough. That's clearly what's going on in this art. Christiansen clearly wasn't instructed to conceptualize transformation, just give Hasbro the clearest look at Beast Wars designs they can get.

"engineer makes good toy/transformation FIRST" Is just flat out not a thing that can be done most of the time since this is the Nostalgia Line that has to grab people by the Nostalgia Balls thru efforts meant to capture the imagery of their Nostalgia Characters. Hasbro can (and probably should more often) do neat toy protos then do the aesthetic part of them later in lines meant for new cartoons and stuff, but the kind of person that buys WFC stuff is (unfortunately?) not interested in "neat spider robot toy that got a blackrachnia head sculpt", they want THE Blackarachnia from THE cartoon.

They will probably be exactly like the toys in the Kingdom anime/cartoon. They have been using the toy CAD files for character models, which is why Megatron's legs have the toy wheels on the back even though he is supposed to be a hover tank.

thing is we had years of that in classics and generations the current process is reverse engineering designs to make the most show accurate models because they are competing with a lot of nostalgia lines coming out at the same time

How do I get this job?!! It seems like the easiest gig in the world.
‘Just draw classic characters as they’ve always looked and then let engineers figure out the tricky stuff.’
