I think he will be "boxy" in alt mode but not 1:1 a box. The wings should be big.

But still quite some things are off. Grimlock having that tinted window chest which is toy accurate. Gnaw didn't have his back pack wings. Jazz and Kup missing some paint apps. It's like they're close, but for some reason it's always a couple of steps away. Same with Legacy, Kickback looks almost completely toon accurate, but they decide to give him a toy colored head, but with a toon colored visor.

Noticed something- Snarl is SS86-19. pretty sure he'd be SS86-18. So is that Hound's number?

To me, 86 seems like it barely walks a fine line between being actual Studio Series and just being normal Generations. It focuses more on screen-accurate takes/improvements as a base, but also throws in some OG toy/CHUG flavor as well. Not to mention that there are a lot of figures between the two lines that feel interchangeable (Jazz, Perceptor, the Dinobots, Cyclonus, Galvatron, Blaster, the Insecticons, Blitzwing(?), etc.). That makes sense though, since they're meant to complement each other. If the 86 figures were too slavish, they'd look out-of-place.

I guess my issue is with the designer's choices on what to make slavish from the cartoon and what to modernize. Like how a lot of people can't stand Snarls, tail, and head proportions. While I personally don't mind there are plenty of examples where the designers reinvent the weird out of date details of the original cartoon but include the most awkward parts of the cartoon models. I just wish if they were gonna improve upon the designs of the cartoon while making it accurate go all the way lol.

I thought ss86 was originally planned to be part of kingdom, up until they decided to add beasties to kingdom. As far as I'm concerned every "g1" style toy from earthrise through evolution AND ss86 are all "g1" on my shelf

Core Ironhide looks good, I like how they got the dark grey shoulders in without it compromising the red on that part of the van. Simple solution, but an improvement over Siege and Earthrise. I do miss the yellow stripe, but I guess they've decided that's not cartoon accurate. Pretty sure it was on him though? Maybe they've confused it with Optimus's lack of a silver stripe?

Yep, I couldn’t possibly care less what the toy line is called on the packaging since it gets thrown away. The toys all go together on a shelf and look like they belong together just fine.

Once Swoop got confirmed as a leader in one of the recent rounds of Listing Leaks I decided to go back and snag a pre-order on Slug and now Slag. I ignored the many years of Masterpiece scale 3rd Party Dinobots and I'm kinda just digging where Leader Class is at these days.

I like the core class ones but I'm hoping for a retool into something weirder there.

    Pretty good Transformer Tuesday

    - Surprised I'm not immediately all in on Grimlock, noticed its extremely faithful to the original SG Grimlock colors

    - Core Ironhide looks great... Wow that's the Siege head... looks better than the 86 head

    - Swoop is somehow completely unscathed from combiner sacrifices... Looks fantastic

What you described with the last sentence kinda sounds like what WFC/Legacy was already doing to an extent, where they start with the toon model as a base but throw in toy-inspired details and greebling into the sculpt, as well as tweak/improve the proportions and design if needed. The most prominent examples I can think of to describe this are Kingdom Huffer and Legacy Dragstrip. I guess the problem is that 86 tries to take the Studio Series approach of being more complex in an effort to be more screen-accurate, but they needed it to blend in with the other line so it just mixes that approach as well, resulting in two sets of figures that feel indistinguishable from each other in a vacuum.

I don't wanna dwell on this too long though, since it feels like beating a dead horse.

Yeah that seems to be the general consensus and (afaik) what happened. I'd say the two lines take slightly different design approaches (or at least they're supposed to), but much like you said it doesn't really matter much when they all share the same shelf

I'm hoping they do a red/toy Swoop variant.

And with the rumored G2 Grimlock, there's a chance we'll get the fabled Sludge and Swoop G2 versions, and man

I almost can't wait to see what a hideous beauty that lime green/sky blue combination will make
