Haha I thought you meant to spoiler the image as it might take up a lot of screen space, it didn't even occur to me the image itself contains spoilers because yeah I assumed we all know the story by now :p .

Ah well, I'll leave it as is now.

I thought this was the first 4K release because they said something about mastering it in 4K. Is it possible they re-mastered it? I was under the impression Shout Factory usually has low quality transfers so I’m not hopeful that it will look that good. Aren’t the colours really messed up on the last bluray release?

It’s disappointing that these still don’t come with a mainstream digital copy.

Yeah when Shout did the remaster for the 30th anniversary they actually scanned it in 4K then downscaled to 1080p for the Blu-Ray. So in theory they already have a ready made 4K scan of the film, it's just whether they are using that for this film or decided to make a new one. The colours of that 30th anniversary scan itself were fine but if I remember right they did something wrong when encoding it onto discs which resulted in (I think?) a problem with the black levels particularly. I can't remember the exact issue though.

Hopefully with this being in 4K and with the ability to use high dynamic range they should be able to get the colours and contrasts spot on. Not expecting anything revolutionary as it's a 35 year old cartoon but nonetheless I'm still geeking out a little at getting this for the 427th time and now in 4K :D

So this is the first 4K release in North America? I wasn't sure. As I'm sure you know, the older films that were actually shot in 35mm or better film actually look much better in 4K than newer films that were filmed with lower res digital. Example is the Star Wars films on 4K. I haven't seen them all in 4K yet but I've heard that the original trilogy looks better in 4K than the prequels because episodes 2 and 3 were filmed using digital cameras that weren't that great. Anyway this movie has the potential to look fantastic in 4K HDR but I'm not sure if it actually will look awesome in the end.

It was so much fun working on the art for this. One of those jobs I thought I’d never get. As a life long Transformers fan, I put everything into this art so it’s really nice to see fellow TF fans loving it. Spoilers and all ;)

Hopefully more news on international releases and other versions of the art soon.

They did tell me it was a new scan of the film, but I’m not sure if they meant new mastering on the scan done a few years ago or a complete remaster. Either way the stills and clips I’ve seen from their scan are definitely crisper than the 1080p.

    Thanks everyone!

Very happy to replace the previous edition. The new cover art is excellent. It'd really be nice to get Scramble City complete with audio and subtitles. Apparently it's a Toei issue, and they're frankly just not very nice sometimes.

You are correct. All the digital effects of movies from the 90’s to 2015+ are all done in “2k”. When movies are up scaled, the digital effects get screwed up. Jurassic Park got the stretched look in 4k. That’s why Avatar hasn’t received a 4k version. Rumor was Cameron was going to fund a frame-by-frame resolution upgrade, then Disney bought Fox and that idea disappeared.

so yeah, the hand drawn transformers movie will look stellar. Dunno if I need it, though.

Oh awesome I didn't realise you're a member here. Really great work for the new cover (as well as the work you did for the GitS Steelbook, you're on a roll ;) ).

Looking forward to seeing more artwork variations and technical info about the release soon :D

Yeah although it was mastered in 4K for the 30th anniversary it was only actually released in 1080p, so this new release will be the first time anywhere that it will be available in 4K. That coupled with the potential HDR improvements mean this should be a decent upgrade over the previous Blu-ray release even if it uses the same master that Shout created last time out :)
