Hi everyone, I'm looking at how to go about getting together a legends size collection of the 1986 movie characters. I want to use my 25th Anniversary Unicron as the centre piece and build around that with legends size as I think it will have more impact that way. I already have a lot of suitable figures for some of the characters but theres still a lot of gaps to be filled below I've made a list of what I feel are major characters in the movie and minor characters that I might not bother with as some are literally on screen for a second along with what I think are suitable Hasbro or 3rd party companys to use. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, advice for characters and brand to go for legends size. I apologise if a thread like this has been done before maybe this could be merged with that one? Primary characters Autobots Optimus prime kbb Ultra magnus mft Springer mft Hot rod mft/papa toys? Rodimus prime ? Kup dx9 Arcee dx9 Blurr ? Grimlock mft Sludge mft Snarl mft Swoop mft Slag mft Wheelie titans return Bumblebee toy soliders Cliffjumper toy soldiers Jazz newage? Blaster mft Perceptor ? Daniel/exosuit mp Spike/exosuit mp Wreckgar combiner wars/mft? Junkions customs from combiner wars? (Scrapheap, Rubbish, Re-Cycle, Trashbin, Junkyard, HAZMAT, Ashtray, Wasteoid Gamma, Greasestain) Not sure if to count them as major but it would be cool to have a whole gang of Junkions like lots of Sharticons Kranix minicon from Unicron or custom? Decepticons/bad guys Megatron mft Soundwave toy soldiers Starscream mft Shockwave mft Galvatron mft Cyclonus mft Scourge mft Unicron 25th anniversary Sharkticons mft Gnaw titans return Quitison custom? Quitison judge earth rise? Allicon earth rise? Devastator dx9 Minor characters Decepticons Ramjet mft Dirge mft Thurst mft Ravage mp Rumble mp Frenzy mp Lazerbeak mp Ratbat mp Astrotrain mft Blitzwing ? Bombshell combiner wars Shrapnel titans return Kickback titans return Skywarp mft Thundercracker mft All Constructions dx9 Reflector mft Autobots Sunstreaker ? Ironhide toy soldiers Hound mft Ratchet toy soldiers Prowl newage Huffer mft Bluestreak ? Brawn titans return Windcharger titans return Wheeljack ? Gears mft Inferno ? Grapple ? Ramhorn kfc Steeljaw kfc Eject kfc Rewind kfc/combiner wars I have about 46 in total of the above already to get started Blurr I'm stuck with as I dont recall ever coming across a legends size one?
If you are willing to be patient there is a good chance Magic Square and/or New Age will get to them in the future. I don't know if waiting is worth it for you. The advantage is they will be in better scale if you can stick with one company (for the most part). MFT and Papa Toys are bigger than most others, New Age is smaller than most others, but there are exceptions. Magic Square seems to be working their way through the toy catalogs (they teased everything from the 1984 toy catalog, Decepticons will be finished once Megatron comes out, presumably once they do they Autobots they will do 1985 next). I have no idea what order New Age is planning to do things. Rodimus prime - I believe the same company that did your Hot Rod also did the Rodimus that is out there. Blurr - DX9 did a Blurr, Speedo, but it is small by todays legends figure standards (don't know how big an issue that is for you), I don't remember if MFT did an OS KO of it or not. Bumblebee - Personally I would suggest New Age, it is an amazing tiny figure, but up to you if it is worth swapping. Perceptor - Mr Moon has one Kranix - I can't imagine you will find it, and if you did at a reasonable price, but I believe Impossible Toys did one, same with the Quintessons. Minor characters Decepticons Cassettes - I've never looked at how the MPs scale with MFT figures, but just to give you a smaller option. Magic Square is just coming out with some, though Rumble and Laserbeak are with Soundwave and SoundBlaster which would be too small for an MFT centered collection. Frenzy, Ravage, and Ratbat are part of a 4-pack of cassettes, at least Ravage looks better than the MP, and I believe Frenzy would too. If you are doing customs anyway the Buzzsaw in the pack could be made into Laserbeak. The Magic Square Autobot Cassettes so far (Steeljaw and Ramhorn) are MASSIVELY inferior to the Con tapes, many people are convinced MS will redo them. Blitzwing - The only current option is Iron Factory, if you aren't desperate wait, a better one will happen eventually I'm sure. Sunstreaker - Closer to IDW than old G1, but I think Iron Factory is the only current option. Bluestreak - Options are Ark Studios (old, probably the worst option but might be cheaper), New Age, and Magic Square. The first 2 have Prowl as well, but MS hasn't released Prowl yet. Wheeljack - ToyWorld has the only G1 looking option for now. Iron Factory has a more IDW-esque one as well. Inferno/Grapple - Magic Square are good, and I think MFT did an OS KO of the MS ones.
First thing is to decide if scale is important to you. Based on the molds you mentioned scale will be all over the place. If you want a single scale there are more or less three options - from smallest to largest, New Age / DX9, Magic Square, and Mech Fans Toys. Magic Square options are pretty limited - you're better off going small or large. I went on the smaller side: Optimus - Magic Square Hot Rod - none (Flame Warrior or MFT Flame Walker make good Hot Rods in a MFT collection with MFT Flame Commander as Rodimus) Rodimus - Papa Toys Flame Warrior Blurr - DX-9 Kup - DX-9 Arcee - DX-9 Bumblebee / Ironhide / Ratchet / Brawn / Prowl / Bluestreak - New Age Ultra Magnus - Magic Square Springer - MFT (out of scale, too big). Cliffjumper - not sure Spike / Daniel - Leinad and Spike from Takara's TR Arcee Blaster - Magic Square (Good but a little small. MFT is too big. Maybe wait to see if Magic Square or New Age does another) Perceptor - none (Mr Moon is too big) Dinobots - DX9 (MFT is a bit big) Jazz - New Age Junkions - nothing good (MFT is too big, Combiner Wars looks nothing like the character) Wheelie - nothing good (Titans Return is too big) Inferno / Grapple - Magic Square Megatron - New Age Soundwave - New Age or Magic Square Seekers - New Age Coneheads - New Age Astrotrain - none (MFT is too big) Blitzwing - maybe Iron Factory, not sure about size Constructicons - DX9 Insecticons - New Age Devastator - KBB Galvatron - DX9 or MFT (DX-9 is a little small, MFT is a little big) Cyclonus - DX9 Scourge - DX9 Quintessons - not sure Sharkticons - Cyberverse Hot Rod vs Sharkticons Allicons - none (Earthrise are too big)
Just to make things easier for Impactor666 it is Takara Legends Arcee, and didn't Spike come with Takara Legends Bumblebee?
Here's a decently consistent blueprint, it's what I'm following for the most part Given that you're probably not going to buy them all at once, it's best to save the "wait and see" ones for last Primary characters Autobots Optimus prime - Magic Square Ultra Magnus - MFT Springer - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Hot rod - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Rodimus prime - Repaint MFT Hot Rod? Kup - DX9 Arcee - DX9 if necessary, otherwise wait and see Blurr - DX9 if necessary, otherwise wait and see Grimlock - MFT or DX9 Sludge - MFT or DX9 Snarl - MFT or DX9 Swoop - MFT or DX9 Slag - MFT or DX9 Wheelie - Wait and see Bumblebee - Newage Cliffjumper - Wait for Newage repaint or Magic Square version Jazz - Newage Blaster - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Perceptor - Mr Moon if necessary, otherwise wait and see Daniel - TR Arcee Spike - TR Arcee Wreckgar - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Junkions - Wait and see Kranix - Minicon from Unicron Decepticons Megatron - Magic Square Soundwave - Magic Square Starscream - Newage or Magic Square Shockwave - Iron Factory/Jinbao if necessary, otherwise wait and see Galvatron - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Cyclonus - Magic Square Scourge - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Unicron - 25th Anniversary Unicron Sharkticons/Gnaw - Cyberverse Hot Rod vs Sharkticons Quintesson Judge - SRC Legends Heroes 01 Q's Judge Allicon - Earthrise or Corbot V Mugger Final Armageddon if necessary, otherwise wait and see Devastator - Downscaled CW KO, otherwise wait and see Minor characters Decepticons Ramjet -Newage or Magic Square Dirge -Newage or Magic Square Thrust - Newage or Magic Square Ravage - Magic Square Rumble - Magic Square Frenzy - Magic Square Lazerbeak - Magic Square Ratbat - Newage (Or wait for Magic Square) Astrotrain - MFT Blitzwing - Iron Factory if necessary, otherwise wait and see Bombshell - Newage Shrapnel - Newage Kickback - Newage Skywarp - Newage or Magic Square Thundercracker - Newage or Magic Square All Constructions - DX9 if necessary, otherwise wait and see Reflector - Magic Square Autobots Sunstreaker - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Ironhide - Newage Hound - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Ratchet - Newage Prowl - Newage or Magic Square Huffer - Magic Square Bluestreak - Newage or Magic Square Brawn - Newage Windcharger - Titans Return if necessary, otherwise wait and see Wheeljack - Toyworld Gears - MFT if necessary, otherwise wait and see Inferno - Magic Square Grapple - Magic Square Ramhorn - MFT Steeljaw - KFC if necessary, otherwise wait and see Eject - KFC if necessary, otherwise wait and see Rewind - KFC if necessary, otherwise wait and see
Good call on both counts - that was Takara Legends Arcee, and Spike was from Takara Bumblebee, not Arcee. Memory's getting hazy...
Thanks guys those are all really good recommendations. I do really like my mech fan toys even if they are slightly larger there pretty robust. Just a shame they dont do them all yet but like you said wait and see what comes out. There was a lot of there characters i wanted first time round i but they were 2 small for what I was currently collecting. So it would give me a chance an a excuse to own plus still quite readily available and affordable. I saw a set of dx9 kup and Arcee ages ago for £25 which I thought was quite reasonable but now on Ebay there is one set £42 so I bit steep. Meanwhile as I have an already large decepticon legend army it makes sense to pick up Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge as the 1st 2 I found mft KO's the pair would be £9 would need repainting which I'm quite happy to do then Scourge is £14 so makes sense to go down that route. I think I'll start slowly picking up a few but not rush into the Autobots/junkions see what else is down the line
I do like the mech fan toys I have there sturdy, pretty robust and in my price range. Dont mind there a little oversized compared to other legends figures, I knew newage were a bit smaller so thought jazz would be ok when I saw them together one comparisons I was like wow I see what everyone means now. Maybe iron factory jazz? I know hes not so classic g1 but is a cool looking figure. I could definitely go with the iron factory Wheeljack or there Mirage the looks and size work for me. I thought I could get away with titans return perceptor which I also have until I saw this lol Only this morning I was watching a mp recommendation that said you could get away with him as a stand In that should of said it all really The mister moon looks a go option as I have that Soundwave to compare with other figures not that you can get him anywhere I can see at the moment. Also is mr moon the perceptor name or the company? Or is that mini the company that makes him? legends between companys is such a mixed bag I see what everyone means now
Everywhere I've seen it Mr Moon was listed as the company name. I don't believe I've ever seen figure names for them, not that I've actually looked.
Those two mister moon figs looked like hot garbage to me, but... eh. Iron Factory also made a Perceptor, back in the day. Not sure you'd do any better trying to track one of these down, but it does exist...
When I think movie bots I think the new bots and main cast. So for me its the following Hot Rod: Papatoys (If I didn't already have it I'd get the upcoming MFT one) Rodimus: MFT Kup: DX9, swapped to MFT when MFT Arcee comes out Springer: MFT Arcee: DX9 to be replaced by upcoming MFT Ultra Magnus: MFT Daniel: Heroes of cybertron PVC figure Wheelie: nothing as of yet Blaster: MFT Blur: Upcoming MFT Perceptor: Nothing as of yet. Wreckgar: Upcoming MFT Galvatron: MFT Cyclonous: MFT Scourge: MFT Sweeps: MFT Quintesson: Who ever made those small ones (lol) Sharkticon: MFT Allicon: Corbot V Unicron: Armada (soon to be replaced by Studio Cell) MFT seems hell bent on completing the cast so anything missing I assume will get an MFT version. I expect a Perceptor, a Wheelie, a new Springer, etc..
Wow that's what I'm talking about there. That's a beautiful setup! Something like that I had in mind. The thing is if I got the entire cast the display would be a bit crowded. That's really effective as it is with the main cast. Thanks for the info now mft have an Arcee coming I dont have to track down the dx9 set of her and kup which would be smaller than mft scale anyway? Mr Moon probably all got snapped up when released and I agree look a bit bland compared to mft Blaster. On that note what did happen to Blaster after they evacuated autobot city? As you never see him for the rest of the movie? Going to have a look at iron factory perceptor but could knock up a custom for him and maybe Blurr as quite basic shapes onnyhete bodys, thinking about doing that for the quitisons as well for that size. That Daniel is perfect!
now that I'm looking forward too. Mft is one of those brands I've picked up a few figures here and there because the mp version was way out of my price range and I liked there attention to detail. So there are a lot I haven't got over time but really wanted this will be my excuse to get them now. There upcoming Wreckgar looks really on the money. Cant be long until hes out now?
After watching more reviews of many different companies I think I will stick with mech fan toys and wait for the characters that haven't been released as I'm sure they will gradually come along. I was tempted to fill a few gaps with Iron factory but I'm sure I'd be disappointed with the scale against the mft figures. Also what's everyone's thoughts on Iron Trans M01 02 03? I think they could work along side mft withca few other exceptions like papa toys hotrod an kbb optimus prime they say 10cm only just noticed these while browsing ebay
They're the Datsun Bros I use in my MFT collection and fit pretty good with other mft carbots, similar size to hound, sideswipe etc. The details are lacking a bit vs the NA sculpts but for a legends+ collection they do the job
