Shout Factory's been pretty good with cult classics lately so I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. That box art though, so bad

    A) It was never a North American release, and the announcement/existence of it was really only known through word of mouth for most of us over here.

    B) Those of us that DID eventually find out about it also heard the quality sucked - that it was essentially just the grainy DVD slid over onto a Blu-Ray disc, and wasn't worth tracking down to buy.

    C) It wasn't digitally remastered the way this release is going to be.

    That's why.

4:3 ratio? Are you bonkers? It's a movie that SHOULD be presented in the aspect ratio it was shown in.

Edit: I can believe this was drawn in 4:3. In fact many movies were shot like that so they didn't have to pan and scan after the fact. But the cinematographer always mattes the viewfinder to keep the composition right for the theater cut.

The Sony anniversary version has both.
I'll definitely pick up the blu-ray to see the difference.

It a nutshell; they're going to do digital & audio enhancements so that it looks & sounds like a proper HD widescreen Blu-Ray release as opposed to just being a lower resolution DVD quality version simply stuck onto a Blu-Ray disc.

To all of you who think the cover sucks: are we all looking at the same thing?
Okay, here's a description of the version I'm seeing:
Up front, a very well drawn Optimus stands in a proud A-stance and is beginning to pull the Matrix open, while a similarly well drawn Rodimus leads the Ginyu Force
On the left, the season one 'Cons are flying towards our heroes while Galvatron and his men do the same on the right, both looking equally like the work of an expert
And in the back, Unicron in ball mode is preparing some manner of beam to fire from his mouth.
So, what are you all seeing?

I'm seeing an extremely under-detailed lego block looking rendition of Prime that barely resembles what he actually looked like and can't decide if he's 2D or 3D, stuck into a picture where NONE of the lighting or shading matches, opening a matrix in what looks like an unfinished drawing with zero detail in the entire chest area... standing behind yet another shitty overly blocky rendition of Hot Rod / Rodimus Prime (hard to tell) doing some Asian warrior pose we've never seen him do on a generic rock... with an entire left side's worth of quickly killed characters that were barely even in the movie at all vs. any of the actual main cast and an entire right side using more Sweeps than ever actually existed... all while what barely looks like Unicron at all is sitting in the background.

    That would be what.

It's BD, so it is going to be automatically better. Plus, they said they are going back to the original source, so that also makes it better.

Can't tell if you are joking...

My favorite part is how Hot Rod's spoiler has one constant angle on the left side, but on the right is one angle before it goes behind is shoulder, then a HUGELY different angle once it comes out.

It's also kind of odd how Primes lower body has almost no 3-dimensionality to it aside from a small underlip above his right knee, but then his upper torso suddenly has a side to it.

Garbage cover is garbage. Livio's pencils always had issues with perspective and proportion, issues which usually got drowned out in the super-saturated (and oftentimes beautiful) coloring he did. Here, he's forced to do a simplified, cartoony color palate and it really makes his weaknesses really stand out.

That coverart, I can't stand it. As bad as Liefeld art. No offense to Livio, and I do like some of his work. But his style does not work for this.

I'd rather prefer full on g1 boxart derp style (like those bad Megaman cover arts) than what's shown there. It is just a cover, though. We can easily print out something else to use in its place.

YES! I've been waiting for this news all year! So happy Shout Factory isn't letting the 30th anniversary pass by unnoticed. And it looks like they're doing it right (new transfer from a pristine 35mm reel). I am gonna buy the shit out of that Blu-ray.
