The Writers Room expanded the mythology of the Transformers started from the previous four movies, and using the source material (cartoon series and IDW comics). Hasbro also sent some "Transformers historians" to teach them about the various incarnations.
On this way, the writers built the mythology, starting from 14 billions of years ago, to the current days.
As said in the interview, they took:

1- Akiva Goldsman's Transformers 5 story (clearly directly connected with the Creators, the origins of Transformers etc.)

    2- Ken Nolan's arthurian story

3- A. Marcum and M. Holloway WWII story

Also, from what the producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said to Collider, we know also that they took two pieces of the mythology and put them togheter to build the movie. Practically, two storylines based on this two pieces of mythology, that, with the advancement of the plot, will become one thing. Here two extracts to clearify:

    1)
"[ ] And this movie, the two lines of mythology in a sense give you freedom to go a lot of different places later on that may or may not directly relate to another movie, but it’s opening up the universe in a way that I think, in that way it’s probably the most provocative, in terms of the movie. It’s opening a really large universe of what Transformers is, and where they’ve come from, and how we relate to them, and how they relate to themselves."

    2)
"They’re part of the same mythology, but the fact that these two pieces could interrelate, and have quite a span in time in which we’re trying to draw from–one is, in the Transformer’s mythology, billions of years ago, and one is hundreds of years ago, so in that sense, those two ideas came together. At first, we thought maybe they were two different movies, and then they came together."

At the IMAX event of the 4th April, in a video Michael Bay said that they took all the best ideas from all the 14 writers to built The Last Knight.
There is a giant work behind.

The Authurian and WWII stuff looks like it's going to be pretty minor. It seems like the bulk of the movie will deal with "evil" Optimus trying to use Earth to restore Cybertron and the struggle to stop him with his eventual redemption.
