I am currently using Shmax. The site works fine for the most part and the spreadsheet they provide is nicely detailed.

I write down what I own on two pieces of paper (one for good guys and one for bad guys so that I can keep them even) and I have a Notepad file for listing stuff that I want.

Nah. Only thing I have is a simple checklist of what I want and its status (pre-order, received, etc)

    I have two spreadsheets:

    - Straight up listing of everything I have, broken down by line. Includes figure name, size class and any notes, such as missing/broken parts, alterations, special information, etc. This spreadsheet is just a record for insurance purposes.
    - Checklist of available figures broken down by line. Includes figure name, size class, faction and any information I felt was pertinent about the figure. Also includes a color key breaking up figures into ones I own, ones I want, ones where I have a version of the mold and ones that I've owned and sold. Made this one mostly to organize my want list and to keep track of upcoming releases.

I just use two separate workbooks in Excel. Tried shmax twice and found the user interface to be too frustrating and annoying, so just sticking with Excel for simplicity.

Why does no one use access?? It way easier to manipulate data and search.

Do they still make Access? Personally I use excel and use filters to find the data i want.

Another google docs user here. It works great for when I see something in a store that I think I might already own and need to make sure.

I actually created a spreadsheet in Excel a couple months back to keep track of all my figures. I even have it set up to tell me how many figures I have, what the MSRP was on them, and what I've paid for them.

Thankfully, I've saved about $400 or so!

I made up two pivot charts:

    One for figures/toylines:

And one to keep a running tally of how much I spend on figures by year/month:

I've been keeping an Excel spreadsheet for about 4 years now. It's broken down similar to others listed..
Name (Alpha), Size(s), Series (G1,TF1,WFC, etc.), & Notes (Autobots Red, Cons Purple)
I keep it updated--it's several sheets now-- when I buy a few new ones and update my copy that I keep in my purse, you might want to choose another way to keep it handy. :)

I did a spreadsheet a LONG time ago, but somewhere around Cybertron I stopped updating it. And it needs an overhaul anyway. I'll likely redo one when I move.
