It depends where your priorities lie I suppose, and there we have many similarities. I'm not getting next year's Metroplex and as usual I am skipping a large portion of Legacy and Studio Series so my purchasing schedule for the next 2 years might end up being Raiden with a sprinkling of mainline figures.

That's a (quite literally) bold statement to make. It depends on your value assessment of the product. I see beautifully molded, scaled and painted model trains (where single locomotives easily cost $200+), which turn into very detailed and faithful representations of the trainbots despite the handicap of the accurate train proportions, and on top of that happen to also combine into a disappointing gestalt. For (me at least) $175 including shipping and taxes.

My value assessment of, say, MP-52 is that it's an overcomplicated mess of panels with a fake cockpit and I'd honestly rather spend that $250-$280 on toilet paper for the next 10 years than on such a figure. But that's my assessment. MP-52 clearly still gets wide acclaim and I'm glad that many people find joy in him.

I for one am very happy that these trainbots are not going the smooth/toon look of the latest MPs. To me Shouki, and no doubt the rest, will stand perfectly next to MP Hot Rod, Sideswipe, MP-10, the Datsuns etc.

That’s exactly the main appeal of the audience Takara is selling them to, train enthusiasts first and then TF fans.

I’m pulling myself out. After some good discussions with my wife, if I can get each figure for 12,000 yen or under, then it’s ok. But I’m thinking that will be next to impossible. This is the first time I’ve canceled on an MP for a long time. Still got Skywarp, the Honda cars, and Nightbird coming. But with Takara taking these prices to new heights, it will get to the point where the hobby won’t be fun anymore for some. I won’t let that happen and I’ll just be very selective from here forward. 120,000 yen for my preference in combined mode just isn’t right when displaying them next to the other Titan Combiners that I have.

Pretty much. If their sales goal of 4-5k is true they are also realistic regarding the niche market they want to hit.

I think I overhyped the evenutal "Takara MP combiner" too much in my head. Always expected it trump all 3rd party attempts. Was expecting a large/badass/hyper accurate/refined sculpt, but this definitely isn't it. Great for you guys who love the train mode though!

Still holding out hope for an official, decently sized MP devastator, don't let us down on that one Takara!

I'm thinking Devastator would have to be next. No licensing and thus not needing to match specific vehicles should make the individual bots cheaper and hopefully larger. Best bet a true G1, more high end version of UW Devastator.

While often simplified, the Constructicons were in fact based on real vehicles. Oddly enough, they could be found as Tomica cars of roughly the same vintage. TakaraTomy could keep them generic like Optimus but there are real world equivalents.

Here are Mixmaster and Long Haul for example. This is in line with the Diaclone robots using real world vehicles.

To further confirm on the scale, I make some measurement using paper cutout, which may not be true accurate, but should be close enough:
HO Scale Model gauge: 16.5 mm (0.65 in)

The height of Shouki would be roughly around 17-17.5cm
    [IMG]

The height of Raiden would be roughly 30cm from heel to head

Living in Japan maybe you'll come across a second hand Raiden in a few years.

Nicely done! Another validation to the pile.

    Great work, thanks!

Ordered mine from CD Japan using a voucher, which almost took the edge off the cost but not quite! Fingers crossed customs will be kind.

I probably have better odds of winning the lotto than going six for six on Masterpiece series combiner bots with no quality issues.

I am not understanding where this idea comes from that the "gestalt looks bad"? The silhouette to me looks obviously cooler than the original with modernized proportions and shapes.

Yup. Either get it or not. And, best to wait for the actual release and completion and pass judgement then (maybe some TT voodoo engineering will amaze us the way MP IH and Inferno mold did)

Licensed alt mods have always been a priority with the Masterpiece line since MP-12.

We're just now getting into things that are not cars like jets and trains.

The original toy yes, think people were expecting a toon accurate Raiden.I'm more disappointed with that versus size, but I imagine if you have a Diaclone reboot collection combined mode might actually fit right in. I'm in because, I'm curious how they are going to pull all these trains off and still have toon accurate bots that aren't bricks and maintain a uniform height when some trains are smaller than others. The combined height and look doesn't ruin the rest of this project for me anyway. I'm excited.

    That's what I'm talking about!

The more I learn about these, the more the price kinda fits. These are:

    1. Licensed train modes.
    2. Transformers
    3. HO scaled engines

I should double check with my dad, who's been in to HO scale model trains for as long as I can remember, but I'm pretty sure engines for those are not cheap. $180 is steep for a Transformer, but I *think* it's about normal for trains.

It also would explain the size. They want these to be something HO train fans can put on their layout.
