It also helps that, in the Japanese dub of the G1 cartoon, the combiners were referred to as the "Gattai Senshi," meaning "Combined Warriors." It could also be translated as "Unite Warriors." ;3

A combination of my two favorite parts of Transformers: Masterpieces and Combiners!

Yep, gattai is the world that has been used for combining in Japanese Transformers since day one. They always shout in in the show before combining. It’s also on all the combiners’ boxes since G1.
    合体 (Gattai)
    合 sum, total
    体 body

Also, don’t expect there to be anything other than combiners in this line.

The “Gattai” “Giant” “Great” part of their original tweet is a slight mistranslation.

    [合体] [巨人化] [グレード]
The “Giant” (巨人化) part actually means “to turn into giant” or “to make as a giant”, with 化 being the operative kanji.
When revealing a new MP, TT often say マスターピース化, which translates as “make into a Masterpiece”.

Some have speculated that the Giant would be referring to city bots etc but that is not the case.

So MPG is masterpiece giant? As in these figures will scale outside of MP? Very confused but it's looking nice, almost chug. Scale doesn't really matter to me with combiners.

Masterpiece Gattai. Gattai (合体) is Japanese for combining.
We don’t know the exact scale for sure yet, but it is assumed the combined figure will be similar to the titan class combiners.

Oh fair enough thanks for clearing that up, so combining masterpiece figures. So they do mean they are going to have a proper MP scale combiner, even though the image looks almost chug?

Either way very interested to see how this pans out.

Yes, it’s an MP combiners subline. It’s continuation might depend on how well Raiden sells.

The complexity might be different from the regular MP line to keep the price down, but that is still only speculation at this time.

    Definitely an exciting development IMO!

I never thought we'd ever get something like this, in fact I thought that unite warriors devastator was the closest they'd ever get. But alas the Japanese love trains so this'll sell well.

Interesting also to see the moon studios one getting released around the same time.

It would amuse me to no end though if all the fiction that came with these figures mentioned that they had all undergone upgrades to make them more fuel efficient.

"Masterpiece" is whatever Takara defines it to be.

And they're purposefully branding this "MPG" so as not to conflate it with mainline MP.

It's like getting mad about a less than show accurate figure in WfC when the goal has always been to get close but not exact.

So MPG is the new CHUG? Takara keeps turning me off with their lines. I am getting more satisfaction from 3rd parties nowadays.

I'm going to be honest, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If it's whatever they say it is then they can claim cyberverse is now the new norm and charge that premium price for it. Granted some Takara fan boys wouldn't blink an eye, but the rest of us would go, "wait a tick now". The term masterpiece carries certain expectations with it and has since it started with MP01. Changing it that drastically hurts the brand that has been built over the many years.

Well yeah. That's how it's always worked. For a while spring loaded weapons and new interpretations of classic characters were the norm for Generations.

    Until they weren't.

MPG != MP is a pretty easy distinction to make.

This is bordering on "TRUKK NOT MUNKEY" territory.

But, I'm not saying it can't be a transformer... I'm simply saying if you say masterpiece then it has some expectations that come with it. The movieverse, beast wars, and G1 all have the expectations that they will be a toon, movie or animation accurate representation of the character. If you are saying it shouldn't matter that's cool. But it makes me sad that Takara thinks this is good for business and continues its trend of underperforming that it's been going down for the last few years

The WfC design style has been making money hand over fist, though. Why wouldn't they pivot to where the money is coming from?

It definitely has, but why call it masterpiece if it is CHUG?
Edit: ATT did this with DirecTV and DirecTV now, it was two completely different services that caused mass confusion and damaged the brand. Now admittedly that's not hard being that company, however if you start calling it something by an already established name you create a sour taste in the mouths of the people who only collect that style and make it harder to keep them separate.

I'm curious about the complexity we're expecting from Raiden and the MPG series. Several posters in the MPG thread are looking at the Shouki picture and saying it is totally CHUG. That is a very a small image and I'm using a phone today, but I'm not seeing a lot of hollow limbs and gaps that need to be filled. We had the earlier leak that wasn't fully painted, but nothing overtly CHUGGISH there either.

If the line is MasterpieceG, is it just wishful hopes causing members to think this is a Combiner Wars redux CHUG series? We originally thought slightly more simple bots like Skids and only 18" tall combiners, but still MP.

I'd love to see a better photo of Shouki to confirm expectations. And a bot height would be cool.

He’s as about CHUG as Skids or a Hasui MP.
