Oh Rom, of all the non-Transformers characters in the IDWniverse, I think I shall miss you most of all when it all comes to an end.
Or maybe Action Man. He was nice too.
The rest, meh.
Exactly this. IDW's shared universe idea was extremely hit or miss IMO.
In my opinion, Rom, Action Man and Revolutionaries were good. Micronauts had its moments. G.I. Joe was very hit and miss even before the shared universe, but did have some great stories over the years (Cobra is still one of the best things IDW has ever put out). M.A.S.K. was boring. Visionaries was just awful. And if we’re really casting the net wide, Jem was surprisingly decent, as was Clue.
Extremely hit and miss for sure, but at the end of the day, I largely enjoyed it, even if certain corners of it were a bit of a chore to get through. Shame it didn’t quite pan out like they’d hoped.
At first you don’t succeed, try again.
They definitely can properly build it from the ground up this time with a new continuity. But I’ll be okay if they don’t.
At least G.I. Joe still has RAH. Which I really need to get back to, I stopped partway through volume 7 of the continuation.
Glad to see jazz will be back. I love OP so much and he was a great part of that story. Will also be a nice break from the recent story.
I just think of how Action Man was probably the last guy to learn the fate of his friend.
I think what made Rom work, outside of the general "superhero cyborg" deal. Is the fact that legally, the only prior source material that could be used was his original toy advert. So they were forced to do the smart thing and build him from the ground-up.
MASK needed a really strong writer to overcome the baggage of it's awful cartoon, IDW clearly weren't interested in doing that. GI Joe has spent 35 years now running it's G1 into the ground, having never had it's Beast Wars. Visionaries did the opposite of Rom and made the fatal mistake of assuming they could trade on nostalgia, when there wasn't enough of that going to pay the bills. I don't consider Jem part of the shared universe deal, regardless of what IDW says. Not a single one of those books was written with that in mind, which is what probably helped it to have the longest run of any of the newly-licensed properties.
Rom just works due to his otherworldly origins. You don't have to build him up like those halfwits in MASK or Action Man. "Here's another galactic superpower" versus "These guys mutilated a beloved character as a side project from a guy from these issues and only use vehicles".
People complained about Nick Roche not being involved in Kup’s death, but it was Action Man’s absence that was the real crime for me.
I've stanned the Hasbro Universe since day 1, though even I will say it had its problems. But as a huge fan of the original Marvel series, I'm glad that Rom has managed to endear himself to most of the skeptics.
Action Man is the Greatest Hero of Them All!
I like him as well, his bromance with Kup is the reason I repurposed TR Kup's Titanmaster as Action Man. It's a shame they won't be facing down the apocalypse together.
I'd enjoy it if Rom and Action Man got reboots alongside Transformers (regardless if they're in the same continuity this time), but I suspect they're going to focus on the bots for a little while.
