I already predicted that Crosscut and Burn-Out will get their own numbers too, I'm assuming they will also be offered at general retail. The popularity of the car is the central selling point here, it doesn't make sense to make them Mall exclusives or otherwise hard to buy for the general public, from whom I expect greater-than-normal interest.

Somebody suggested making one of them some kind of Honda dealership exclusive, maybe where you get the toy for taking a test drive. Honestly kind of brilliant marketing for Honda, though of course it will suck for us non-Japanese collectors. That's where they ought to put the red Turbo, the red Skids, if they do him.

 

I hope for MP Crosscut.

The eHobby Crosscut came with the Motocompo, so the MP will too. If we're seeing anything here, we're seeing that Takara is slavishly recreating these toys' original releases, even when it's to their detriment to do so. MP Skids doesn't come with the Motocompo because G1 Skids didn't, even though including it could only have helped sales. People are going to see these two side-by-side in the store and say "The red one comes with the scooter, the blue one doesn't, I'm buying the red one." Literally no Transformers fan anywhere would have said "The scooter?! Man, Skids isn't supposed to have a scooter! Hard pass!"

Takara should be correcting the mistakes of the past, not repeating them.

Hmmm. Pretty sure I'm getting Skids (need to see a few more pictures of those possibly ridiculously wide shoulders before I'm 100%), but am I getting the red one? I'd be all over it but I already have the 3P Crosscut- and I absolutely love that while the two will be similar they won't be identical).

 

Not a big deal- but if you can easily answer, why do you think this doesn't signal a change in the lines direction? (not doubting you)

 

Jumping in with my opinion, you can't look at how Takara chooses to present a D-list character like Skids as indicative of any sort of major shift in aesthetic. You have to look at how they present an A-lister like Starscream. They're in a rough spot with Skids, how to market a guy who barely appeared in the cartoon and whose animation model was a bit shit anyway? I think they chose to lean heavily into the real-world aesthetic (get that car mode looking like a model) and try to appeal to the toy fans who might have had Skids when they were young.

Expect people to double down on these "they're going back to the Hasui style!" pronouncements when we finally see how they're cooking Raiden, who I expect to also draw heavily on the real-world/toy aesthetic. But again, where is he sitting? On the D-list, right next to Skids.

Also with limited A & B listers left (at least from the pre- movie cast), it would certainly make sense to do Jazz and Cliffjumper using this overly tune aesthetic (which I really, really dislike) as it seems very unlikely that after all this time Porsche will finally give a license. The only way those two are getting made is as blobby toon cars. (but that's ok, plenty of good 3P options)
