I learned of him about the same time I learned about the greater Transformers Universe- around two years ago when I started collecting. I don't know how a modern fan hasn't heard of him, maybe doesn't know his whole backstory, but doesn't at least know OF Star Saber. Those who are ancillary though, maybe only know a single continuity or just grab some classic or vintage though, I'd understand.

It got 4k in one day after its listing first went up.

The Japanese market will move quickly. They know it's there.

Most Japanese order activity is within the span of ~5 days. That's about how long it seems to take for most limited Japanese collector goods to sell out. If they don't within the first few seconds of orders opening, at any rate.

They don't hem and haw the way Western collectors do.

A big part of why Japanese collector culture is the way it is is because Japanese workaday people have money on their hands, but no time (between steady/constant work hours, school pressures, and long commutes). Collecting gives them a way to indulge the things they enjoy, but doesn't cost them time in the way a long vacation or intensive hobbies do. So they're typically not waiting around for paychecks or other things in the way that you see Western fans often hesitate on.

They'll let the color pics go first. Give that a chance to stew and then reveal the next tier when they want a boost.

I wonder if Japan's proposed four day work week will change that.

Japanese G1 isn't really obscure in the far east.

That'll be an interesting question for the future.

It'll probably just mean even more god-tier Gunpla builders showing off and making us envious of their skills, though :p .

a 4 day work week will never happen in japan, i mean it might technically come about but everyone will still go in on that 5th and 6th day as usual as " service hours "

I don't mean for Victory Saber, I mean for toy collecting in general.

I collected G1 as a kid, got out about the time Pretenders were a thing. That would have been '88 and I would have been 12 at the time. I didn't even know about the Micromaster bases, much less anything that came after G1. Heck, I didn't even know it was called G1, since I didn't know about G2 or Beast Wars, much less anything that came after that--it was just "The Transformers" to me.

I got back in to Transformers around the time the first Michael Bay movie came out, though I don't have many toys from that one. Most my stuff is later than that, RotF or the beginning of the Generations line. My first encounter with Star Saber was the PotP fan poll (the "choose who will be the next Prime" one), but I didn't know who he was and didn't do any digging. It wasn't until I started wondering "who else could they possibly release as a Titan", and while reading through TFWiki, stumbled across Black Zarak. That would have been... about the time they were planning to release Scorponok, I think.

I honestly still don't know much about JG1 or Star Saber's back story and find what little I know of JG1 to be deeply, deeply weird. Doesn't mean I don't find the robots cool (I do), or that I don't want toys of them (I definitely do).

I think people who know about JG1 underestimate how niche it is in the west. I certainly learned about a lot of Transformers stuff I missed while I was out of the hobby, like Beast Wars, the Unicron Trilogy, etc. but basically nothing about JG1 until I tripped over it by accident.

You know, this one is growing on me. Especially with these color images. I wasn't that impressed with the design at first. It looked less like Transformers more like generic Japanese heroic robots. But I've been warming to it. And it does look pretty fun.

I may just end up backing this after all.
