I see some Mega Class toys packaged in the red box and then the purple box. Is there a difference to them? Just curious.

I didn't even know there was a difference. I do believe the purpley boxes were the first release stuff, and the red boxes are the later waves, so maybe Habsor thought purple didn't stand out enough on the shelves and switched to red to help sales?

Powerlinx Battles is the red i think.

Edit: Found my Energon Energon Starscream, and yeah, red is the Powerlinx Battles. Mostly the upgraded (repainted) characters.

In the Unicron trilogy, each series lasted approximately 18 months, and in the middle got a "sub-brand" (Powerlinx Battles, etc) and package refresh. Was mostly just their way of keeping things fresh at the time.

Wow, brings back memories from middle school. I loved the black packaging, but the Powerlinx Battle stuff was ugly as sin.

It's cause I'm planning to buy Energon Scorponok. He's in like a red package for the Powerlinx battle as well as a purple-ish black box.

I'm fairly certain it was just a repack in his case, as I recall, Hasbro wasn't satisfied with how much the first version shelfwarmed ;)

It's just a case of some toys getting packaging variants for the subline imprint du jour.

Same thing happened again this year with RID:

If there are any differences between figures, it'll be a case of a running change variant coinciding with the packaging change.
